## What it does

\`redshift-guide` gives an agent Redshift-specific guidance instead of letting PostgreSQL habits shape the answer. It covers SQL, metadata, authentication and connectivity, storage, `EXPLAIN` plans, queue waits, statistics, `COPY` and `UNLOAD`, WLM, materialized views, Spectrum, and the Redshift Data API with Python and `boto3`. It also addresses permission errors, disk growth, spill, distribution skew, `VACUUM`, and datashares.

The skill separates Redshift Serverless from provisioned clusters because their APIs, system views, and Data API parameters differ. It flags common mismatches such as `CREATE INDEX`, `SERIAL`, `string_agg`, `pg_catalog`, and `text`, and points metadata questions toward `SHOW` commands. Check whether the target uses a workgroup or a cluster first; that choice changes the troubleshooting path. The guidance works especially well with the AWS MCP server, while its core instructions use AWS CLI and SQL.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill redshift-guide -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/redshift-guide/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill redshift-guide -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill redshift-guide -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws redshift-guide
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill redshift-guide -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/redshift-guide
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill redshift-guide -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/redshift-guide/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check SQL for PostgreSQL assumptions that fail in Redshift
- inspect a slow query through its `EXPLAIN` plan
- diagnose `COPY` or `UNLOAD` errors
- trace disk growth, spill, or distribution skew
- troubleshoot Redshift access, IAM, and connectivity

## Example prompts
- Review this query for Amazon Redshift and replace PostgreSQL constructs that Redshift does not support.
- Analyze this slow Redshift query from its `EXPLAIN` plan and tell me what to check next.
- This is Redshift Serverless. Diagnose the Redshift Data API permission error and check the connection parameters.

# Amazon Redshift Guide

## Redshift is NOT PostgreSQL (read first)

Redshift speaks PostgreSQL's wire protocol and shares much of its surface syntax, so
LLMs assume PostgreSQL behavior carries over — it frequently does not. Divergences span
system tables (`pg_catalog` is incomplete), DDL (no indexes, no sequences), functions
(`string_agg`, `SUBSTR` on tables, leader-node-only functions), types (a `text` column
becomes VARCHAR(256)), and comparison semantics (trailing blanks, unenforced constraints). **Assume
divergence and verify against the reference below — do not answer from PostgreSQL habit.**
Common PostgreSQL→Redshift divergences are in `references/redshift-sql-syntax.md`.

**Works best with** the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/agent-toolkit/) — it runs the
AWS CLI and Redshift Data API calls below in a sandboxed, audit-logged environment. All
guidance here is plain AWS CLI and SQL and works without it.

## STEP 0: Serverless or Provisioned?

Establish this before answering — APIs, system tables, and capabilities differ. Take it
from the question when it says which one; **ask** when it does not. `SELECT version()`
does not identify it.

- **Serverless** — identified by a *workgroup* (and namespace). Data API calls take
  `--workgroup-name`; the user says "workgroup"/"Serverless".
- **Provisioned** — identified by a *cluster*. Data API calls take
  `--cluster-identifier`; the user says "cluster".
