## What it does

This skill covers installing and configuring Redis for caching, queues, rate limiting and session storage. It ships a `/etc/redis/redis.conf` layout with network, memory and logging blocks, plus a `redis-cli` reference for strings, hashes, lists, sets and sorted sets.

Persistence gets its own sections: RDB snapshots on a schedule and AOF with `appendfsync everysec`. For high availability there is Sentinel watching `mymaster`, and cluster mode built with `redis-cli --cluster create` across 6 nodes. The skill also lists working patterns — cache with TTL, a sliding-window rate limiter, pub/sub, and a distributed lock via `SET ... NX EX`.

You need a Linux server or Docker, and root or sudo to install packages. The config advises disabling dangerous commands such as `FLUSHALL` and `CONFIG` with `rename-command`; do that before the first production start, not after. Sentinel needs at least three instances, otherwise there is no quorum.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill redis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/redis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/redis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill redis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/redis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill redis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/redis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills redis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/redis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill redis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/databases/redis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/redis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill redis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/databases/redis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install Redis and confirm it answers `redis-cli ping`
- set maxmemory and pick an eviction policy
- turn on RDB and AOF so data survives a restart
- stand up Sentinel with automatic failover
- cap requests per user with a sorted set

## Example prompts
- Configure Redis as a cache with a 5 minute TTL and allkeys-lru
- Create a 6-node Redis cluster with one replica per master
- Show me a distributed lock using SET NX EX

# Redis

Configure, operate, and optimize Redis for caching, queues, rate limiting, and real-time data storage.

## When to Use

- You need a low-latency in-memory cache to reduce database load.
- Your application requires rate limiting, session storage, or leaderboards.
- You need pub/sub messaging between services.
- You want a distributed lock or job queue backed by an in-memory store.

## Prerequisites

- Linux server or Docker.
- Root or sudo access for package installation.
- Redis 7.x recommended for production.

## Installation and Setup

```bash
# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y redis-server
# RHEL / Amazon Linux
sudo dnf install -y redis
# Start and enable
sudo systemctl enable --now redis-server
# Verify
redis-cli ping
# Expected output: PONG
```

## Core Configuration

Edit `/etc/redis/redis.conf`:

```ini
# Network
bind 0.0.0.0
port 6379
protected-mode yes
requirepass strong_redis_password
# Memory
maxmemory 2gb
maxmemory-policy allkeys-lru
# Connections
maxclients 10000
timeout 300
tcp-keepalive 60
# Logging
loglevel notice
logfile /var/log/redis/redis-server.log
# Security — disable dangerous commands in production
rename-command FLUSHALL ""
rename-command FLUSHDB ""
rename-command CONFIG ""
rename-command DEBUG ""
```

```bash
sudo systemctl restart redis-server
```

## redis-cli Commands Reference

```bash
# Connect with authentication
redis-cli -a strong_redis_password
# Connect to a remote host
redis-cli -h 10.0.0.5 -p 6379 -a strong_redis_password
```

### String Operations

```
# Set only if key does not exist (distributed lock pattern)
SET lock:order:42 "worker-1" NX EX 30
# Increment counters
### Hash Operations
```
HSET user:1 name "Alice" email "alice@example.com" plan "pro"
