# redis-search

A skill that walks your agent through Redis Search: index schema, field types, FT.SEARCH queries and vector retrieval. Useful when building search or a RAG pipeline on Redis.

## What it does

The skill covers the whole path from `FT.CREATE` to debugging a query. Your agent gets guidance on field types: `TEXT` for full-text, `TAG` for exact match, `NUMERIC` for ranges, `GEO` and `GEOSHAPE` for coordinates and areas, `VECTOR` for similarity, JSON paths for nested fields. A table helps pick the command — `FT.SEARCH` for document retrieval, `FT.AGGREGATE` for facets and aggregates, `FT.HYBRID` for blending lexical and vector ranking.

Vector fields get their own section. `DIM`, `DISTANCE_METRIC` and `TYPE` have to match your embedding model exactly. Get the dimensionality wrong and queries return silent garbage, so it pays to check the index settings before shipping. There is a comparison of HNSW against FLAT, DIALECT 2 query syntax, zero-downtime schema updates through aliases, and troubleshooting of empty or slow results with `FT.PROFILE`, `FT.EXPLAIN` and `FT.INFO`.

One install command covers Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. `FT.HYBRID` needs Redis 8.4.0; on older versions the lexical-plus-vector blend is approximated with `FT.SEARCH` pre-filtering and `=>[KNN ...]`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add redis/agent-skills --skill redis-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/redis-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/redis-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add redis/agent-skills --skill redis-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/redis-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add redis/agent-skills --skill redis-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/redis-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install redis/agent-skills redis-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/redis-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add redis/agent-skills --skill redis-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/redis/agent-skills --path skills/redis-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/redis-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add redis/agent-skills --skill redis-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- design an `FT.CREATE` index schema around real queries
- choose between `TEXT`, `TAG`, `NUMERIC` and `VECTOR` for a field
- write `FT.SEARCH` with filters, sorting and a tight `RETURN`
- set up KNN vector search and tune HNSW parameters
- find out why a query returns nothing or runs slow

## Example prompts
- Create a Redis Search index for products with category, price, location and an embedding
- Write an FT.SEARCH query filtered by tag and price range, sorted by price
- Why does my KNN query return empty results? Check it with FT.PROFILE

# Redis Search

Single source of guidance for Redis Search — the retrieval surface that spans lexical, numeric, geo, JSON-path, and vector queries. Vector fields are part of the same `FT.CREATE` machinery as TEXT/TAG/NUMERIC fields, and `FT.HYBRID` blends lexical and vector ranking in one command, so this skill covers them together.

## When to apply

- Creating, modifying, or reviewing a Redis Search index (`FT.CREATE`, `FT.ALTER`).
- Writing or optimizing `FT.SEARCH`, `FT.AGGREGATE`, or `FT.HYBRID` queries.
- Picking between `TEXT`, `TAG`, `NUMERIC`, `GEO`, `GEOSHAPE`, `VECTOR`, or JSON-path fields.
- Defining a `VECTOR` field, choosing HNSW vs FLAT, tuning HNSW parameters.
- Building a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline.
- Rolling out a new index schema without downtime.
- Troubleshooting empty results, slow queries, or tokenization issues with `FT.EXPLAIN`, `FT.PROFILE`, `FT.INFO`.

## 1. Pick the right command

Three query commands. Reach for the narrowest one that fits.

| Command | When to use | Mental model | Minimum Redis |
|---|---|---|---|
| **FT.SEARCH** | Document retrieval, ranked or sorted. Best default. | Returns matching docs directly. | 2.0 (module) / 8.0 (built-in) |
| **FT.AGGREGATE** | Faceting, computed fields, custom output shape, analytics. | Declarative pipeline: `LOAD`, `APPLY`, `GROUPBY`, `REDUCE`, `SORTBY`. | 2.0 / 8.0 |
| **FT.HYBRID** | Blend lexical (BM25) with vector similarity, with configurable fusion. | Pipeline with explicit `SEARCH` + `VSIM` legs and a `COMBINE` fusion stage. | **8.4.0** |

```
# FT.SEARCH — most common
FT.SEARCH idx:products "@category:{electronics} @price:[100 500]" LIMIT 0 20 RETURN 3 name price category
# FT.AGGREGATE — top categories by avg price
