## What it does

This skill guides coding assistants on using the `@upstash/redis` SDK in TypeScript and JavaScript. Because the SDK automatically handles native types, manual calls to `JSON.stringify` or `parseInt` are unnecessary. The files cover key-value pairs, hashes, sparse index-addressed arrays, and vector search with `redis.vector`.

Included topics cover cache-aside strategies, rate limiting via `@upstash/ratelimit`, distributed locks, and full-text search with metric aggregations. It also explains automatic request batching through pipelines and multi-command transactions.

Running these scripts requires `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL` and `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN` in your environment, since the client communicates with Redis over REST.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill redis-js -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill skills -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skills/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skills/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill skills -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skills/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill skills -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skills/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install upstash/redis-js skills
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skills/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill skills -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/upstash/redis-js --path skills
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skills/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/redis-js --skill skills -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- store native JavaScript objects without manual string serialization
- implement rate limiting using the @upstash/ratelimit package
- build real-time leaderboards using Sorted Sets
- run full-text search queries and bucket aggregations in Redis
- batch operations efficiently with automatic pipelining

## Example prompts
- Save a user session object to Upstash Redis with a one-hour TTL
- Write a rate limiting middleware using @upstash/ratelimit
- Create a vector index and run a nearest-neighbour query using redis.vector

name: redis-js
description: Work with the Upstash Redis JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for serverless Redis operations. Use for caching, session storage, rate limiting, leaderboards, full-text search (querying, filtering, aggregating with @upstash/redis search extension), and all Redis data structures. Supports automatic serialization/deserialization of JavaScript types. Search also available via @upstash/search-redis and @upstash/search-ioredis adapters for TCP clients.

# Upstash Redis SDK - Complete Skills Guide

This directory contains comprehensive guides for using the `@upstash/redis` SDK. These skill files are designed to help developers and AI assistants understand and use the SDK effectively.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @upstash/redis
```

## Quick Start

### Basic Initialization

```typescript
import { Redis } from "@upstash/redis";
// Initialize with explicit credentials
const redis = new Redis({
  url: "UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL",
  token: "UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN",
});
// Or initialize from environment variables
const redis = Redis.fromEnv();
```

### Environment Variables

Set these in your `.env` file:

```bash
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL=https://your-redis.upstash.io
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN=your-token-here
```
