## What it does

The skill hands your agent a breakdown of developer subreddits: who reads them, how the culture runs, and how much self-promotion each one tolerates. Communities like r/programming and r/sysadmin sit in the zero-tolerance column, while r/selfhosted and r/opensource get slack for open source work. Your agent consults those tables whenever you ask it to draft a post or a reply.

Mechanically it is a `SKILL.md` file dropped into your platform's skills directory. Inside you get a checklist for reading a subreddit's rules before posting — sidebar, wiki, top posts — plus notes on common restrictions such as the 10:1 ratio and ready-made comment templates. Separate lists cover what gets downvoted and what earns a ban: link-only posts, vote manipulation, multiple accounts.

The skill advises a separate account and warns against using your company name as the username. It also states plainly that genuine participation comes first, over months, before any self-promotion. Without that karma buffer many subreddits will not let a post through at all, so the early work is all comments. If you want a fast traffic channel, this is the wrong play.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill reddit-engagement -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/reddit-engagement/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill reddit-engagement -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill reddit-engagement -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jonathimer/devmarketing-skills reddit-engagement
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill reddit-engagement -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --path skills/reddit-engagement
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill reddit-engagement -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/reddit-engagement/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find subreddits that will accept a developer product
- write a useful comment instead of a promo post
- check a subreddit's rules before publishing
- learn which behaviors trigger a ban
- build account history before the first self-promo

## Example prompts
- Which subreddits do Go developers actually read, and where is a side project welcome?
- Check the r/webdev rules — can I show my project there, and on which day?
- Draft a reply to this deployment question, no links to my product

# Reddit Engagement

Reddit can drive massive developer traffic — or get you banned for self-promotion. This skill covers authentic engagement across developer subreddits, understanding each community's rules, and the comment-first strategy that actually works.

---

## Before You Start

1. Read `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` if it exists
2. Identify which subreddits your developers actually use
3. Create a dedicated Reddit account (using your real identity is fine, but don't use your company name as username)
4. Understand: Reddit requires months of genuine participation before self-promotion

---

## Developer Subreddit Landscape

| Subreddit | Members | Culture | Self-promo tolerance |
|-----------|---------|---------|---------------------|
| r/programming | 6M+ | Technical depth, skeptical | Very low |

| r/javascript | 2M+ | Framework debates, news | Low |
| r/Python | 1.5M+ | Helpful, educational | Moderate |
| r/devops | 500K+ | War stories, tools | Moderate |
| r/selfhosted | 400K+ | DIY, open source love | Moderate for OSS |

### Niche Technical Subreddits

| Category | Subreddits | Notes |
|----------|------------|-------|
| Languages | r/rust, r/golang, r/typescript, r/cpp, r/java | Often more welcoming to relevant tools |
| Frameworks | r/reactjs, r/vuejs, r/angular, r/nextjs, r/django | Very specific content requirements |
| Infrastructure | r/kubernetes, r/docker, r/aws, r/terraform | Practical problems welcome |
| Specialties | r/netsec, r/machinelearning, r/datascience | Deep expertise expected |

## Understanding Subreddit Rules

### Check Before Posting

Every subreddit has different rules. Before engaging:

1. **Read the sidebar** — Rules, posting guidelines, allowed content
2. **Check the wiki** — Many have self-promotion policies
