# red-green-proof

Writes a test that fails on the current code, applies the fix, then reverts it to confirm the test goes red again. Built for debugging and incident work.

## What it does

The skill turns a suspected bug into a proven one. You establish the cause from evidence you can point at: the actual database record, the log line, the source of the function you are blaming. Then you label the finding `Proven`, `Inferred` or `Unknown` and say it out loud. A confident wrong cause costs more than an admitted gap, because it sends the fix to the wrong place.

The test is written against the code as it stands now, before any fix, and it has to fail. Name it after the defect, not the function. Assert the observable consequence a caller would see — the wrong status, the lost record, the 500 — rather than a call count, since counts pass for the wrong reasons. If it does not fail, the bug is not reproduced and you go back to the cause step.

The step that matters is putting the buggy code back and watching the test fail, then restoring the fix. A test that stays green both ways proves nothing, and the skill calls it fake without hedging. Each phase is reported separately: target and cause, the red command with real output, green and revert-red results, plus the final suite status. Invoked bare, it takes the target from the conversation, so it fits right after a debugging session.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add alirezarezvani/claude-skills
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install engineering-skills@claude-code-skills
```
This installs the whole engineering-skills plugin with all its skills

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alirezarezvani/claude-skills --skill red-green-proof -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/red-green-proof/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alirezarezvani/claude-skills red-green-proof
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alirezarezvani/claude-skills --path engineering-team/skills/red-green-proof
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alirezarezvani/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/engineering-team/skills/red-green-proof/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- prove a regression test actually catches the defect instead of a nearby path
- record a pre-fix failure instead of writing the test after the fix
- separate the real cause from a plausible mechanism
- check a test that landed in the same commit as the fix
- preserve a failing seed or timing before stabilizing a flaky test

## Example prompts
- /red-green-proof the status endpoint reports finished runs as running
- /red-green-proof
- check that the lost-record test fails without the fix

# Red-Green-Proof

A bug is not fixed because the tests pass. A bug is fixed when a test **fails without your fix and passes with it**, and you have watched it do both.

## Overview

Use this skill when a bug, incident, flaky test, or unproven regression test is
under investigation. It applies a strict red-green-red loop: establish the
cause, observe a focused test fail, make the smallest fix, then remove the fix
and observe the test fail again. The final revert is the proof that the test is
actually coupled to the defect.

## Workflow

Keep evidence for each phase separate. A test command that exits zero is not
evidence that it exercised the defect; record the assertion and the observed
failure or success. Do not proceed when the current phase is unobserved.

Before changing code, identify the exact test command and expected red signal.
After the fix, run that same command without changing its assertions. During
the revert, use the same command again and preserve the failure output. Restore
the fix before running the broader suite.

## Proactive Triggers

- A pull request adds a regression test but no pre-fix failure is recorded →
  ask for the red run before calling it coverage.
- A bug fix changes production code and tests in one step → verify the test
  fails against the parent revision or label the evidence as missing.
- A test uses only mocks or call-count assertions → ask for the observable
  user-facing consequence.
- A test is described as flaky → preserve the failing seed, timing, or
  interleaving before attempting a stabilization fix.

## Output Format

Report each investigation with: (1) target and cause, labeled `Proven`,
`Inferred`, or `Unknown`; (2) the red command and actual failure before the
fix; (3) green and revert-red results with actual output; and (4) final suite
status and remaining uncertainty.
