# recover

The skill works out which kind of failure you hit, then picks the response: a targeted fix, a clean restart or a rethink.

## What it does

When an AI agent keeps patching code and the result gets worse, the bug is rarely the real problem. `recover` starts by asking what type of failure this is, and only then suggests what to do. You describe what you expected, what happened instead, and how many fix attempts you have already made.

From there it sorts the situation into three modes. A local break: one component or function is wrong while the rest of the project works, so the skill hunts for the root cause and proposes a precise fix. A polluted session: fixes are patching fixes and the context is full of failed attempts, so it tells you to write a short reset note, close the session and start fresh. A wrong foundation: the code runs but behaves in a fundamentally wrong way because something was assumed that is not true. Here the skill names that assumption and proposes a different approach instead of rebuilding straight away.

Nothing changes until you confirm. If a suggested fix does not work, the skill stops rather than firing off another one, and re-examines the diagnosis. Two wrong root causes in a row mean the failure mode itself is probably misread.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --skill recover -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/recover/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/recover/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --skill recover -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/recover/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --skill recover -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/recover/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill recover
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/recover/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --skill recover -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --path skills/recover
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/recover/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jsmastery-pro/jsm-agent-skill --skill recover -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- tell a plain bug apart from a polluted session
- find the root cause instead of patching symptoms
- stop in time and restart with a clean context
- spot a wrong assumption under working code
- write a reset note before abandoning a session

## Example prompts
- The build fails at the auth step and I've tried to fix it twice — work out what kind of failure this is
- I'm editing the same thing for the third time and the code is tangled. What now?
- The form submits but the data comes back wrong. I think I misread the API

name: recover
description: When something goes wrong during a build, diagnose what type of failure it is before deciding how to respond. Targeted fix, hard reset, or full rethink — the right response depends on the right diagnosis.
---

Not every problem is a bug. Not every bug needs debugging.

When something goes wrong with AI-assisted development, the instinct is to keep prompting — describe the problem, ask for a fix, get another broken version, describe that problem, ask for another fix. The session gets longer. The context gets polluted. The code gets worse.

The problem is not the code. The problem is not knowing what type of failure you are dealing with.

This skill diagnoses the failure first. Then it prescribes the right response. Those are two separate steps and they cannot be swapped.

---

## Step 1 — Describe What Went Wrong

The developer describes the problem. The skill listens before doing anything else.

Ask:

```
Describe what is wrong. Be specific:
- What did you expect to happen?
- What happened instead?
- How many times have you tried to fix it already?
```

Read the answer carefully. The number of fix attempts is important — it tells you whether this is a fresh problem or a session that has already gone wrong.

---

## Step 2 — Identify the Failure Mode

Based on the description, determine which of three failure modes this is.

### Failure Mode 1 — A specific thing is broken

**Signs:**

- The problem is isolated — one component, one function, one route
- The rest of the project works correctly
- This is the first or second attempt at fixing it
- The error message or wrong behaviour is clear and specific

**What it means:**
This is a normal bug. It has a root cause that can be found and fixed precisely.

**Response:** Targeted fix — go to Step 3A.

---

### Failure Mode 2 — The session has gone wrong

**Signs:**

- Multiple fix attempts have made things worse or created new problems
- The code has become tangled — fixes are patching fixes
- Context in this session is full of failed attempts
- It is no longer clear what the original problem was

**What it means:**
The session is polluted. More prompting will not help — it will compound the damage. The feature needs to be rebuilt in a clean context, not patched further.

**Response:** Hard reset — go to Step 3B.

---

### Failure Mode 3 — The foundation is wrong

**Signs:**

- The code runs but produces fundamentally wrong behaviour
- Claude has been confidently building something that misunderstands a core requirement, library API, or architectural pattern
