## What it does

The skill hands your agent ready-made code patterns for recommender systems. It covers user-based and item-based collaborative filtering with cosine similarity, matrix factorization via `TruncatedSVD`, and a hybrid recommender that blends collaborative and content scores with adjustable weights. A separate section walks through evaluation: Precision@K, Recall@K, NDCG, catalog coverage.

Cold start gets its own treatment. New users get popular items and onboarding preferences, new items get content-based bootstrapping, and exploration strategies include ε-greedy and Thompson sampling bandits. The known-issues section tackles popularity bias with a re-ranking function for diversity, and sparsity by switching from memory-based CF to matrix factorization.

The code relies on `numpy`, `scipy.sparse` and `sklearn` — examples won't run without them. The source cuts off partway through the sparsity section, so helper modules like `evaluation_metrics` and `cold_start` are worth checking in the repository itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill recommendation-engine -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/recommendation-engine/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill recommendation-engine -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill recommendation-engine -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills recommendation-engine
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill recommendation-engine -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/recommendation-engine/skills/recommendation-engine
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill recommendation-engine -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/recommendation-engine/skills/recommendation-engine/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate personalized product recommendations from interaction history
- pick between collaborative filtering and a content-based approach
- compute Precision@K and Recall@K on a held-out set
- diversify results so the feed isn't all popular items
- handle cold start for new users and new items

## Example prompts
- build an item-based collaborative filter on my interaction matrix
- add a hybrid recommender with 0.7 weight on the collaborative side
- compute Precision@10 and Recall@10 for user 42

# Recommendation Engine

Build recommendation systems for personalized content and product suggestions.

## Recommendation Approaches

| Approach | How It Works | Pros | Cons |
|----------|--------------|------|------|
| Collaborative | User-item interactions | Discovers hidden patterns | Cold start |
| Content-based | Item features | Works for new items | Limited discovery |
| Hybrid | Combines both | Best of both | Complex |

## Collaborative Filtering

```python
import numpy as np
from scipy.sparse import csr_matrix
from sklearn.metrics.pairwise import cosine_similarity
class CollaborativeFilter:
    def __init__(self):
        self.user_similarity = None
        self.item_similarity = None
    def fit(self, user_item_matrix):
        # User-based similarity
        self.user_similarity = cosine_similarity(user_item_matrix)
        # Item-based similarity
        self.item_similarity = cosine_similarity(user_item_matrix.T)
    def recommend_for_user(self, user_id, n=10):
        scores = self.user_similarity[user_id].dot(self.user_item_matrix)
        # Exclude already interacted items
        already_interacted = self.user_item_matrix[user_id].nonzero()[0]
        scores[already_interacted] = -np.inf
        return np.argsort(scores)[-n:][::-1]
```

## Matrix Factorization (SVD)

```python
from sklearn.decomposition import TruncatedSVD
class MatrixFactorization:
    def __init__(self, n_factors=50):
        self.svd = TruncatedSVD(n_components=n_factors)
    def fit(self, user_item_matrix):
        self.user_factors = self.svd.fit_transform(user_item_matrix)
        self.item_factors = self.svd.components_.T
    def predict(self, user_id, item_id):
        return np.dot(self.user_factors[user_id], self.item_factors[item_id])
```

## Hybrid Recommender

```python
class HybridRecommender:
    def __init__(self, collab_weight=0.7, content_weight=0.3):
````
