# recommend

The skill checks a task description or code snippet and suggests a matching es-toolkit function. Use it when you need to find a utility or replace a manual implementation.

## What it does

recommend checks the es-toolkit version installed in the project before suggesting a function. It searches the package’s runtime entry points, reads the relevant declaration and, when available, checks the implementation. Its answer includes an import, a documentation link, a code example and a reason the function fits.

When the package cannot be resolved, the skill won’t make up a function name. Run the search from the package that depends on es-toolkit; in a Yarn Plug’n’Play project, use `yarn node` instead of `node`. This matters in a monorepo, where the repository root may not be the package with the dependency.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add toss/es-toolkit --skill recommend -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/recommend/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/recommend/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add toss/es-toolkit --skill recommend -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/recommend/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add toss/es-toolkit --skill recommend -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/recommend/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install toss/es-toolkit recommend
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/recommend/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add toss/es-toolkit --skill recommend -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/toss/es-toolkit --path es-toolkit-plugin/skills/recommend
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/recommend/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add toss/es-toolkit --skill recommend -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/toss/es-toolkit/tree/HEAD/es-toolkit-plugin/skills/recommend/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose an es-toolkit function for a described task
- find a utility for arrays, objects or strings
- check whether a function exists in the installed version
- compare candidate functions by behavior and return type
- find a lodash replacement through the migration skill

## Example prompts
- Find an es-toolkit function to group these objects by `status`.
- Review this code and suggest a matching es-toolkit utility: `const result = ...`
- Find an es-toolkit replacement for this lodash operation and explain which option fits.

# Function Recommendation

Recommend the most suitable es-toolkit function for the user's needs, grounded in source code and official documentation.

## Input

$ARGUMENTS — A description of what the user needs, or a code snippet to analyze.

## Why grounding matters

es-toolkit evolves faster than any training data can track. Always verify function existence, entry point, and behavior from the version installed in the user's project. The skill may be installed as a standalone directory, so never assume the es-toolkit repository or a sibling `docs` directory is available.

## Workflow

### 1. Understand the requirement

Parse $ARGUMENTS to identify:

- What operation the user wants to perform
- What data types are involved (array, object, string, etc.)
- Whether they might need lodash migration help (if so, suggest `/es-toolkit:migrate`)

### 2. Find candidates in the installed package

Run from the package that depends on es-toolkit. In a monorepo this is usually a workspace package, not the repository root. If the project uses Yarn Plug'n'Play, use `yarn node` instead of `node`.

Search runtime entry points with this command, replacing `merge|assign` with terms relevant to the request:

```bash
node --input-type=module -e "
import { createRequire } from 'node:module';
const require = createRequire(import.meta.url);
const pattern = /merge|assign/i;
const pkg = require('es-toolkit/package.json');
const entries = Object.keys(pkg.exports)
  .filter(subpath => subpath !== './package.json' && !subpath.includes('*'))
  .map(subpath => subpath === '.' ? 'es-toolkit' : 'es-toolkit/' + subpath.slice(2));
const modules = await Promise.all(entries.map(entry => import(entry).catch(() => null)));
if (modules.every(module => module == null)) {
  console.error('es-toolkit is not resolvable from ' + process.cwd());
  process.exit(1);
}
const matches = new Map();
for (let index = 0; index < modules.length; index++) {
  const module = modules[index];
  if (module == null) continue;
  for (const name of Object.keys(module)) {
    if (!pattern.test(name)) continue;
    matches.set(name, [...(matches.get(name) ?? []), entries[index]]);
  }
}
for (const [name, entryPoints] of [...matches].sort()) {
  console.log(name.padEnd(24), entryPoints.join(', '));
}
"
```

The output is authoritative for the installed version. A function can exist in more than one entry point, so consider all matches. `es-toolkit/types` is type-only and cannot be imported at runtime; inspect its declaration file instead.

If es-toolkit is not resolvable, say that the installed version cannot be verified. Do not invent a function name.

When the current project is the es-toolkit source repository itself, search `src/` and its specs directly instead of requiring a built package.
