# rebuttal

A skill that turns external reviews into a grounded, venue-compliant rebuttal. Useful when the response deadline is close and you need every concern covered.

## What it does

The skill parses external reviews, atomizes them into individual concerns, and builds a response strategy. Then it drafts a text-only rebuttal under the venue limit, lints it, and revises. `QUICK_MODE` stops after the early phases and outputs `ISSUE_BOARD.md` plus `STRATEGY_PLAN.md`, which is handy when you want to see what reviewers actually want before writing anything.

Three hard gates guard the draft. Provenance: every factual statement must map to the paper, a review, or a user-confirmed result or derivation. Commitment: every promise must be already done, approved for the rebuttal, or marked future work. Coverage: no reviewer concern may be left unanswered. Fail a gate and the draft does not get finalized.

You supply the paper source, the raw reviews with reviewer IDs, and the venue rules — name, character or word limit, whether a revised PDF is allowed, and whether responses render as one shared document or per-reviewer threads. If the rules, limit, or rendering mode are missing, the skill stops and asks. It does not run new experiments on its own: with `AUTO_EXPERIMENT = false` it pauses and hands the evidence gap back to you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill rebuttal -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rebuttal/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill rebuttal -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill rebuttal -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep rebuttal
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill rebuttal -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/rebuttal
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill rebuttal -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/rebuttal/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a stack of reviews into individual concerns
- merge shared and reviewer-specific complaints into one plan
- draft a response that fits the venue character limit
- check that no reviewer concern goes unanswered
- run follow-up rounds in each reviewer thread

## Example prompts
- /rebuttal "paper/" — venue: NeurIPS, character limit: 5000
- Prepare a rebuttal for the paper in paper/ using the reviews in reviews.md
- Build ISSUE_BOARD.md from these reviews, skip the draft for now

# Workflow 4: Rebuttal

> **Before each reviewer slot**, follow [Selectable Reviewers](../shared-references/reviewer-backends.md):
> resolve invocation → `.aris/reviewer.json` → Claude Code default (Codex MCP)
> with `reviewer_route.py` through the canonical helper resolver, preserving this
> slot's tier, fresh contexts, source/image inputs and deterministic gates.
> Codex examples/pins below apply only to `backend=codex`; other routes use their
> own first-call/reply contract. Save the route and actual returned identity;
> unavailable selections are `REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE`. Classify acceptance from actual
> families/completion/scope. Forward invocation reviewer/model/effort overrides
> to reviewer-bearing children. Generation workers are unchanged.

Prepare and maintain a grounded, venue-compliant rebuttal for: **$ARGUMENTS**

## Scope

This skill is optimized for:
- **text-only rebuttal** under strict character/word limits (e.g. ICML single-document)
- **per-reviewer thread responses** where each reviewer renders independently (e.g. OpenReview-style)
- **multiple reviewers** with shared and reviewer-specific concerns
- **follow-up rounds** after the initial rebuttal
- safe drafting with **no fabrication**, **no overpromise**, and **full issue coverage**

This skill does **not**:
- run new experiments automatically
- generate new theorem claims automatically
- edit or upload a revised PDF
- submit to OpenReview / CMT / HotCRP

If the user already has new results, derivations, or approved commitments, the skill can incorporate them as **user-confirmed evidence**.
