## What it does

This skill teaches the agent to work with web archives. The main tool is the Wayback Machine CDX API, which enumerates every URL a crawler ever saw under a host, including paths nobody remembers. The `collapse=digest` parameter reduces a page's history to the captures where content actually changed, so hundreds of rows become a handful of dates.

A lookup table picks the archive per situation: a 404 goes to Wayback first, then archive.today; a JavaScript-heavy page or a social post goes to archive.today because it captures the rendered DOM; a URL Wayback excluded goes to archive.today and Common Crawl. There is a section on why replay is not the capture: the archive injects its own toolbar and pulls each resource from its nearest capture, so for parsing or citing you append `id_` to the timestamp and fetch the raw response.

What it actually recovers: old team pages with titles and direct email addresses, prior pricing and terms, removed posts, contact details from before the switch to a form, and wording that was edited out. A preservation section covers submitting the live URL to Save Page Now and archive.today, then taking your own WARC with `wget --warc-file` and hashing it with `sha256sum`. One caveat worth knowing: archived JavaScript that called an API at view time has no data behind it, because the API response was never captured. Those pages are shells by nature. The skill ships under the MIT license.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill read-deleted-pages -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/read-deleted-pages/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill read-deleted-pages -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill read-deleted-pages -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install UseOSINT/Skills read-deleted-pages
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill read-deleted-pages -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills --path skills/read-deleted-pages
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill read-deleted-pages -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/read-deleted-pages/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- recover the text of a page that now returns 404
- see what a site said before an edit and when it changed
- enumerate every archived URL for a domain, subdomains included
- find prior pricing, refund terms and removed posts
- capture a finding before someone takes it down

## Example prompts
- this page is deleted, pull its last version from the archive
- list every archived URL for example.com using the CDX API
- diff the two versions of the pricing page and tell me what was removed

# Read deleted pages

Archives work because removal is a decision made after publication. The
beginner's mistake is treating the Wayback Machine as a website you browse: the
calendar UI shows one page at a time, while the CDX API enumerates every URL the
archive ever saw under a host, including paths nobody remembers.

## Which archive first

| Situation | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A URL that 404s now | Wayback, then archive.today | Different corpora, different removal pressure |
| "What did this site say before X" | Wayback CDX with `collapse=digest` | Gives the dates content changed, not every capture |
| A JS-heavy page or a social post | archive.today | Captures the rendered DOM; Wayback often replays an empty shell |
| Wayback says the URL is excluded | archive.today, then Common Crawl | Neither answers to Wayback's exclusion process |
| Paths and subdomains you don't know about | CDX with `matchType=domain` | It is an enumeration tool, not a lookup tool |
| A URL Wayback never captured | Common Crawl | Independent crawler, different seeds |
| Regional or national-TLD content | A Memento aggregator, then the national archive | Some national archives offer full-text search |
| Evidence you cannot lose | Capture it yourself, then submit to two archives | Nobody else is preserving it for you |
