## What it does

The skill covers spring physics in React Spring plus Popmotion's low-level utilities. Instead of animating over a fixed duration, a spring derives motion from mass, tension and friction, so the transition looks natural and can be interrupted halfway. Inside are hook patterns: `useSpring`, `useTrail`, `useTransition`, `useScroll`, `useInView`.

Examples walk through click-triggered motion, staggered lists, enter and exit transitions, scroll-driven reveals, and preserving momentum after a drag with `getVelocity()`. There is a separate section on React Three Fiber via `@react-spring/three`. Config presets such as `config.gentle`, `config.wobbly` and `config.stiff` set the feel of the motion without hand-tuning numbers.

One thing to know: Popmotion is marked optional and only matters for advanced cases like keyframes and decay. For a 3D scene you install `@react-spring/three` on its own, since `@react-spring/web` does not cover it. If motion-framer is already in the project, treat this as an alternative approach rather than a layer on top — running both systems on one component is extra work for no gain.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill react-spring-physics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-spring-physics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill react-spring-physics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill react-spring-physics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install freshtechbro/claudedesignskills react-spring-physics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill react-spring-physics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --path plugins/bundles/animation-components/skills/react-spring-physics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill react-spring-physics -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/freshtechbro/claudedesignskills/tree/HEAD/plugins/bundles/animation-components/skills/react-spring-physics/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an interruptible animation that reacts to input mid-motion
- add momentum scrolling and decay effects
- stagger a list so items appear one after another
- keep velocity after a drag so the gesture does not cut off
- animate a 3D object in React Three Fiber with springs

## Example prompts
- Make a button that springs to scale 1.2 on click and settles back
- Stagger the list items with useTrail and config.gentle
- Reveal a block when it enters the viewport using useInView

# React Spring Physics

Physics-based animation for React applications combining React Spring's declarative spring animations with Popmotion's low-level physics utilities.

## Overview

React Spring provides spring-physics animations that feel natural and interruptible. Unlike duration-based animations, springs calculate motion based on physical properties (mass, tension, friction), resulting in organic, realistic movement. Popmotion complements this with composable animation functions for keyframes, decay, and inertia.

**When to use this skill:**
- Natural, physics-based UI animations
- Gesture-driven interfaces (drag, swipe, scroll)
- Interruptible animations that respond to user input mid-motion
- Smooth transitions that maintain velocity across state changes
- Momentum scrolling and inertia effects

**Core libraries:**
- `@react-spring/web` - React hooks for spring animations
- `@react-spring/three` - Three.js integration
- `popmotion` - Low-level animation utilities (optional, for advanced use cases)

## Core Concepts

### Spring Physics

Springs animate values from current state to target state using physical simulation:

```jsx
import { useSpring, animated } from '@react-spring/web'
function SpringExample() {
  const springs = useSpring({
    from: { opacity: 0, y: -40 },
    to: { opacity: 1, y: 0 },
    config: {
      mass: 1,        // Weight of object
      tension: 170,   // Spring strength
      friction: 26    // Opposing force
    }
  })
  return <animated.div style={springs}>Hello</animated.div>
}
```

### useSpring Hook Patterns

Two initialization patterns for different use cases:

```jsx
// Object config (simpler, auto-updates on prop changes)
const springs = useSpring({
