# react-server-components

A skill that teaches React Server Components: which components belong on the server and where 'use client' goes. Useful in Next.js App Router.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when the agent edits `*.tsx` and `*.jsx` files and guides the split between server and client components. Server components fetch data and render markup by default; the `'use client'` directive is only for state, effects and event handlers.

Inside are rules for the directives plus the mistakes that come up most. One point gets its own callout: `'use server'` marks Server Functions and Server Actions, not a component — server components carry no directive at all. The skill also repeats that RSC complement SSR rather than replace it, and that heavy libraries like markdown parsers stay out of the client bundle.

Browser APIs are the real trap. `window`, `localStorage` and `IntersectionObserver` do not exist in a server component, so that code has to move to a client one. And when a component is already small, the server/client boundary costs more complexity than it saves — worth leaving alone.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-server-components -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-server-components/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-server-components/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-server-components -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-server-components/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-server-components -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-server-components/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills react-server-components
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-server-components/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-server-components -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/react-server-components
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-server-components/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-server-components -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- keep a markdown parser out of the client bundle
- decide whether a component needs the `'use client'` directive
- move `window` and `localStorage` access into a client component
- split a page into a server container and an interactive part
- migrate from `getServerSideProps` to async components in `app/`

## Example prompts
- Split this component into a server part that fetches data and a client part with the handlers
- Check these `*.tsx` files and tell me where `'use client'` is missing
- This component only renders data from the database — can it be a server component?

React's [Server Components](https://react.dev/reference/rsc/server-components) enable **modern UX with a server-driven mental model**. This is quite different from Server-side Rendering (SSR) of components and results in significantly smaller client-side JavaScript bundles.

## When to Use

- Use this when you want to reduce client-side JavaScript by running data-fetching and rendering on the server
- This is helpful for improving performance with zero-JS-cost server-rendered components in Next.js 13+ App Router

## When NOT to Use

- When the component needs client-side interactivity — state (`useState`), effects (`useEffect`), and event handlers require Client Components
- For components that depend on browser-only APIs (e.g., `window`, `localStorage`, `IntersectionObserver`)
- When the component is already small and the server/client boundary adds more complexity than it saves

## Instructions

- Use Server Components (default in frameworks like Next.js App Router) for data fetching and non-interactive UI
- Add `'use client'` directive only to components that need interactivity (event handlers, state, effects)
- Server Components can use heavy libraries (markdown parsers, date formatters) at zero client bundle cost
- Server Components complement SSR — they are not a replacement for it
- Use Server Functions or Server Actions (`'use server'`) for form submissions and mutations when your framework supports them

## Details

> **Update (React 19 / modern frameworks):** React Server Components are now a production feature for framework users. Unlike classic SSR, RSCs let you render part of your UI on the server without shipping that component's JavaScript to the client. The Container/Presentational pattern is a strong fit here: the "container" can be a Server Component that fetches data and passes it to an interactive Client Component.
