## What it does

The skill kicks in when components re-render more often than expected, the UI feels sluggish while typing or scrolling, or the profiler shows wasted renders in the tree. Your agent applies the patterns during code generation, review and refactoring: spot an anti-pattern and it suggests the corrected version with an explanation.

The patterns are ordered by impact, so the biggest wins come first. Derived values get computed during render instead of living in state; components subscribe to coarse-grained state such as a boolean flag rather than a raw value that changes continuously; expensive subtrees move into memoized components so their work is skipped on loading and error paths. Lower down are lazy state initialization and the functional `setState` form for stable callbacks.

The skill is scoped to `**/*.tsx` and `**/*.jsx` and runs with `Read`, `Grep` and `Glob` — it reads and suggests, it does not edit your files. If React Compiler is enabled, some manual `useMemo` and `memo()` calls stop being necessary because the compiler memoizes on its own, though extracting components for early returns still pays off. Worth checking your build config before following every tip.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-render-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-render-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-render-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-render-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-render-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-render-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-render-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills react-render-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-render-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-render-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/react-render-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-render-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-render-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- stop re-renders that fire on every window resize
- replace duplicated state with values derived during render
- extract an expensive subtree into a memoized component
- find wasted renders with the profiler
- switch a function call in `useState` to lazy initialization

## Example prompts
- Look at `ProductList.tsx` — it re-renders on every keystroke in the search field, apply the render optimization patterns
- Scan `**/*.tsx` and tell me where `useMemo` is justified and where a plain `const` is enough
- Check `Sidebar.tsx`: it subscribes to window width when it only needs a boolean, fix that

Practical patterns for eliminating unnecessary re-renders, reducing rendering cost, and keeping React UIs responsive. These patterns apply to any React application — whether you're using Vite, Next.js, Remix, or a custom setup.

## When to Use

Reference these patterns when:
- Components re-render more often than expected
- UI feels sluggish during typing, scrolling, or interactions
- Profiler shows wasted renders in the component tree
- Building performance-sensitive features (dashboards, editors, lists)
- Reviewing or refactoring existing React components

## Instructions

- Apply these patterns during code generation, review, and refactoring. When you see an anti-pattern, suggest the corrected version with an explanation.

## Details

### Overview

React re-renders a component whenever its state changes, a parent re-renders, or context it consumes updates. Most re-renders are harmless, but when they trigger expensive computation, deep trees, or layout thrashing they become visible to users.

The patterns below are ordered by impact — address the biggest wins first before reaching for micro-optimizations.

---

### 1. Compute Derived Values During Render — Don't Store Them

**Impact: HIGH** — Eliminates an entire category of bugs and unnecessary state.

Storing values that can be computed from existing state or props creates synchronization problems and extra re-renders. Compute them inline instead.

**Avoid — redundant state that drifts:**

```tsx
function ProductList({ products }: { products: Product[] }) {
  const [search, setSearch] = useState('')
  const [filtered, setFiltered] = useState(products)
  useEffect(() => {
    setFiltered(products.filter(p =>
