## What it does

The skill kicks in when an app targets Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Amazon Vega/Kepler, or a web TV platform such as Tizen or webOS, and the problem comes down to remote input, focus, packaging, hardware, or the player. Plain React Native performance and architecture questions are out of scope — react-native-best-practices covers those.

Reference files are grouped by prefix: `focus-*` and `nav-*` for focus engines, directional navigation and Back/Menu behavior, `design-*` for typography and safe areas, `perf-*` for startup, lists and animation, `video-*` for manifests and DRM, `a11y-*` for accessibility. A stack detection table tells you which setup expectations apply: `react-native-tvos` shows up as a package alias in package.json, Expo TV adds `@react-native-tvos/config-tv`, Vega/Kepler brings `@amazon-devices/*` dependencies. Check that first. Demanding a tvOS Podfile or an Android TV manifest from a Vega app is a false positive.

Priorities are strict. Focus and D-pad come first, then list and input performance, then playback and DRM, layout, accessibility, and finally stack setup and release. The skill advises profiling on the weakest supported device and splitting playback failures by layer, from the manifest request down to the React controls.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill react-native-tv-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill react-native-tv-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill react-native-tv-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install callstackincubator/agent-skills react-native-tv-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill react-native-tv-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/callstackincubator/agent-skills --path skills/react-native-tv-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill react-native-tv-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/callstackincubator/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/react-native-tv-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trace why focus disappears after a modal closes
- split a playback failure by layer: manifest, DRM license, decoder
- check whether the UI is readable from across the room
- identify the TV stack before touching native folders
- stop frame drops caused by focus event handling

## Example prompts
- Review remote navigation on this screen: focus is lost after returning from a modal
- Break down this playback error — manifest, DRM license or decoder?
- Detect the TV stack in this project and tell me which setup expectations apply

# React Native TV Best Practices

## Overview

TV-specific review guidance for React Native-backed apps on Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Amazon Vega/Kepler, and web-based TV targets such as Tizen or webOS.

Use this skill only for TV deltas: remote input, focus engines, 10-foot layout, platform packaging, playback/DRM, low-memory TV hardware, and TV accessibility. For ordinary React Native performance or architecture issues, use [react-native-best-practices](../react-native-best-practices/SKILL.md).

## Skill Format

Reference files are grouped by topic prefix:

- `focus-*`: focus engines, focus guides, focus event performance
- `nav-*`: D-pad navigation, Back/Menu behavior, keyboard/search input
- `design-*`: 10-foot typography, layout, color, focus visibility
- `perf-*`: startup, memory, lists, animation, and network constraints on TV hardware
- `video-*`: playback architecture, DRM/protocol selection, debugging
- `a11y-*`: TV accessibility implementation and audit checks
- `setup-*`: stack detection, setup, architecture, cross-platform behavior
- `test-*` and `release-*`: test coverage, E2E, and CI/release workflows

## When to Apply

Apply this skill when the app targets a TV platform and the work involves:

- Focus movement, visible focus, focus restoration, or remote/D-pad input
- TV layout readability, overscan/safe areas, or 10-foot UI density
- TV player controls, manifests, DRM, decoder support, or playback errors
- Performance on low-memory TV hardware, especially with video or large carousels
- TV accessibility with screen readers, captions, focus order, or remote-only interaction
