## What it does

The skill ships a reference set for `react-native-mmkv`, a synchronous key-value store for React Native backed by the MMKV engine through Nitro Modules. A routing table maps each kind of question — instance creation, hooks, encryption, migration — to its own file under `references/`. The assistant reads that file before writing code, so answers use the library's actual methods instead of invented ones.

Covered: the `createMMKV()` factory, reading and writing strings, numbers, booleans and buffers, hooks such as `useMMKVString` and `useMMKVListener`, change subscriptions via `addOnValueChangedListener`, AES-128 and AES-256 encryption, moving data over from AsyncStorage, and integrations with zustand, redux-persist, jotai and react-query. A separate file walks through the V4 upgrade: the constructor became `createMMKV()`, `.delete()` turned into `.remove()`, and `react-native-nitro-modules` is now a required peer dependency. V4 needs React Native 0.75 or newer.

Everything lives in memory, so keep the total around 100 MB — past that you get memory warnings. For bigger datasets the reference suggests SQLite or WatermelonDB. On a V3 codebase the skill flags the calls that break, which is worth checking before you bump the dependency.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-mmkv -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-native-mmkv/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-mmkv -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-mmkv -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install margelo/react-native-skills react-native-mmkv
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-mmkv -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/margelo/react-native-skills --path skills/react-native-mmkv
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-mmkv -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/margelo/react-native-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/react-native-mmkv/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an MMKV instance with the right options
- read and write a string, number or buffer
- subscribe a component to value changes
- move data from AsyncStorage with a completion flag
- wire MMKV into zustand or redux-persist

## Example prompts
- Show me how to persist zustand state with MMKV
- How do I migrate from AsyncStorage to MMKV?
- What's the storage limit for MMKV?

description: Fast synchronous key-value storage for React Native via react-native-mmkv (Nitro-backed). Covers creating and configuring MMKV instances, reading/writing all value types (string, number, boolean, buffer), React hooks for reactive UI, value-change listeners, encryption, AsyncStorage migration, and state-management integrations (zustand, redux-persist, jotai, react-query). Also covers storage limits, multi-process mode, and the V4 upgrade from the class-based API.

# react-native-mmkv

A focused reference for AI coding assistants working in a project that uses `react-native-mmkv`. Answer using the real APIs from this library — not invented ones — by routing to the matching `references/*.md` file below.

## Mental model

`react-native-mmkv` is a high-performance, synchronous key-value storage library for React Native, backed by Tencent's [MMKV](https://github.com/Tencent/MMKV) C++ engine via Nitro Modules (JSI). It is ~30x faster than AsyncStorage.

The three things that trip people up:

1. **Everything is synchronous.** No `await`, no Promises. `storage.getString('key')` returns the value immediately. This is the whole point — MMKV memory-maps files and reads/writes in-process.
2. **It's a key-value store, not a database.** All data is cached in memory. Keep total size under ~100 MB; for larger datasets use [react-native-nitro-sqlite](https://github.com/margelo/react-native-nitro-sqlite) or WatermelonDB. There is no fixed storage limit — but memory warnings will fire if you go too large.
3. **V4 is a breaking rewrite.** The constructor changed from `new MMKV()` to `createMMKV()`, `.delete()` became `.remove()`, and `react-native-nitro-modules` is now a required peer dependency. See the [upgrade guide](./references/upgrade-v4.md).

> **V4 requires React Native 0.75+.** It works on both the New Architecture and the old architecture (Nitro is backwards compatible).

## Routing table — problem to reference

Load the matching file from `references/` before writing code. Each reference cites real APIs from the library.
