# react-mcp

A skill for wiring @assistant-ui/react-mcp into an app: users connect their own MCP servers in the browser and the tools show up in chat.

## What it does

The skill walks through adding a user-managed MCP server manager to assistant-ui. Fixed presets are declared with `defineConnector`, the manager persists server and auth state, and every connected tool is registered into `modelContext` as `serverId__toolName`.

Three references ship with it: manager setup and storage, the UI primitives, and OAuth handling. The styled config dialog comes from `npx assistant-ui@latest add mcp-config` and is imported from `@/components/assistant-ui/elements/mcp-config.aui`. For a settings page or sidebar you compose the headless primitives instead.

Scope matters here. This covers servers the end user picks, not MCP tools owned by your backend. If no chat runtime supplies `modelContext`, the manager mounts a minimal one. One thing to watch: after frontend tool calls, the runtime still has to send the results to your route or the model won't continue.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill react-mcp -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-mcp/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-mcp/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill react-mcp -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-mcp/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill react-mcp -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-mcp/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills react-mcp
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-mcp/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill react-mcp -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/react-mcp
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-mcp/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill react-mcp -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- let users connect their own MCP server from the browser
- declare server presets with `defineConnector`
- persist custom servers and OAuth state across sessions
- render structured input requests during a tool call
- debug missing server tools or a broken OAuth redirect

## Example prompts
- Mount `McpManagerResource` with a Linear connector using OAuth and the read scope
- Build a settings page from `McpManagerPrimitive` and `McpAddFormPrimitive` instead of the copied dialog
- Why doesn't the model continue after a frontend tool call completes?

# assistant-ui React MCP

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

`@assistant-ui/react-mcp` lets users connect preset or custom Streamable HTTP MCP servers in the browser. The manager persists server and auth state, exposes connection state to primitives, and registers each connected tool into `modelContext` as a frontend tool named `serverId__toolName`.

## Mount the manager

Declare fixed connectors with `defineConnector`, then extend the nearest `aui` scope with a config. `connectionTimeout` is a manager default in milliseconds. A connector or custom server can override it for its own connect and `listTools()` readiness flow.

```tsx
"use client";
import type { ReactNode } from "react";
import { AuiConfig, AuiProvider, useAui } from "@assistant-ui/react";
import { McpManagerResource, defineConnector } from "@assistant-ui/react-mcp";
const connectors = [
  defineConnector({
    id: "linear",
    name: "Linear",
    url: "https://mcp.linear.app",
    auth: { type: "oauth", scopes: ["read"] },
    icon: "/icons/linear.svg",
  }),
  defineConnector({
    id: "weather",
    name: "Weather",
    url: "https://mcp.example.com/weather",
    auth: { type: "none" },
    connectionTimeout: 10_000,
  }),
];
export function Providers({ children }: { children: ReactNode }) {
  const aui = useAui();
  const config = AuiConfig({
    mcp: McpManagerResource({
      connectors,
      connectionTimeout: 15_000,
    }),
  });
  return (
    <AuiProvider extends={aui} config={config}>
      {children}
    </AuiProvider>
  );
}
