## What it does

The skill covers React Hook Form, Zod and the `@hookform/resolvers` adapter. Your agent gets working patterns for defining a schema, inferring the type with `z.infer`, wiring the form through `zodResolver` and handling submit. Validation modes are spelled out — `onSubmit`, `onChange`, `onBlur`, `all` — along with a table of `useForm` options.

There is a separate section on server-side checks. Client validation is easy to skip past with devtools or curl, so the same schema parses the request body on the backend and errors come back through `error.flatten().fieldErrors`. One schema means the rules cannot drift apart between frontend and API.

The skill names its own dependencies: `react-hook-form@7.66.1`, `zod@4.1.12` and `@hookform/resolvers@5.2.2`. Install them before asking the agent to write a form, or it will reference imports that do not exist. The description also flags the usual trouble spots: uncontrolled to controlled warnings, resolver errors, async validation, dynamic fields via `useFieldArray`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ovachiever/droid-tings --skill react-hook-form-zod -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-hook-form-zod/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ovachiever/droid-tings --skill react-hook-form-zod -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ovachiever/droid-tings --skill react-hook-form-zod -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ovachiever/droid-tings react-hook-form-zod
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ovachiever/droid-tings --skill react-hook-form-zod -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ovachiever/droid-tings --path skills/react-hook-form-zod
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ovachiever/droid-tings --skill react-hook-form-zod -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build a validated form without duplicating rules on client and server
- infer a TypeScript type straight from a Zod schema
- wire shadcn/ui Form components into React Hook Form
- run a multi-step wizard that validates each step
- fix uncontrolled to controlled warnings and resolver errors

## Example prompts
- Build a login form with react-hook-form and zod, keep the schema in its own file
- Add server-side validation with the same schema to the login handler
- Turn this form into a multi-step wizard with useFieldArray for the participant list

  Build type-safe validated forms in React using React Hook Form and Zod schema validation. Single schema works on both client and server for DRY validation with full TypeScript type inference via z.infer.

  Use when: building forms with validation, integrating shadcn/ui Form components, implementing multi-step wizards, handling dynamic field arrays with useFieldArray, or fixing uncontrolled to controlled warnings, resolver errors, async validation issues.

# React Hook Form + Zod Validation

**Status**: Production Ready ✅
**Last Updated**: 2025-11-20
**Dependencies**: None (standalone)
**Latest Versions**: react-hook-form@7.66.1, zod@4.1.12, @hookform/resolvers@5.2.2

---

## Quick Start (10 Minutes)

### 1. Install Packages

```bash
npm install react-hook-form@7.66.1 zod@4.1.12 @hookform/resolvers@5.2.2
```

**Why These Packages**:
- **react-hook-form**: Performant, flexible form library with minimal re-renders
- **zod**: TypeScript-first schema validation with type inference
- **@hookform/resolvers**: Adapter to connect Zod (and other validators) to React Hook Form

### 2. Create Your First Form

```typescript
import { useForm } from 'react-hook-form'
import { zodResolver } from '@hookform/resolvers/zod'
import { z } from 'zod'
// 1. Define validation schema
const loginSchema = z.object({
  email: z.string().email('Invalid email address'),
  password: z.string().min(8, 'Password must be at least 8 characters'),
})
// 2. Infer TypeScript type from schema
type LoginFormData = z.infer<typeof loginSchema>
function LoginForm() {
  // 3. Initialize form with zodResolver
  const {
    register,
    handleSubmit,
    formState: { errors, isSubmitting },
  } = useForm<LoginFormData>({
    resolver: zodResolver(loginSchema),
    defaultValues: {
      email: '',
      password: '',
    },
  })
  // 4. Handle form submission
  const onSubmit = async (data: LoginFormData) => {
    // Data is guaranteed to be valid here
    console.log('Valid data:', data)
    // Make API call, etc.
  }
  return (
    <form onSubmit={handleSubmit(onSubmit)}>
      <div>
        <label htmlFor="email">Email</label>
        <input id="email" type="email" {...register('email')} />
        {errors.email && (
          <span role="alert" className="error">
            {errors.email.message}
          </span>
        )}
      </div>
      <div>
        <label htmlFor="password">Password</label>
        <input id="password" type="password" {...register('password')} />
        {errors.password && (
