## What it does

The skill wires up the `agent-react-devtools` CLI, which attaches to a live app over the React DevTools protocol. Your agent gets the component tree with stable labels like `@c1` and `@c2`, reads props, state and hooks for a single component, searches components by display name, and lists the ones carrying errors or warnings.

Profiling works in three steps: `profile start`, interact with the app, `profile stop`. Then `profile slow` ranks components by average render time, `profile rerenders` shows what re-rendered most, and the output names the cause — `props-changed`, `state-changed`, `parent-rendered` — plus which keys changed. You can export to JSON and run `profile diff` on two exports to compare before and after a fix.

Labels reset on reload or HMR update, so call `wait --connected` first and re-read the tree with `get tree` or `find`. If you drive the app with `agent-browser`, use headed mode: headless Chromium does not execute ES module scripts the same way, and the connect script never runs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --skill react-devtools -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-devtools/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-devtools/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --skill react-devtools -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-devtools/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --skill react-devtools -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-devtools/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools react-devtools
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-devtools/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --skill react-devtools -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --path packages/agent-react-devtools/skills/react-devtools
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-devtools/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-react-devtools --skill react-devtools -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- find out why a component re-renders
- rank components by average render time
- read props, state and hooks of one component
- compare profiles before and after a fix
- list components with errors or warnings

## Example prompts
- why does this component re-render? check it with react-devtools
- start profiling, I'll click around, then show me the slowest components
- find SearchBar and show me its state

# agent-react-devtools

CLI that connects to a running React or React Native app via the React DevTools protocol and exposes the component tree, props, state, hooks, and profiling data in a token-efficient format.

## Core Workflow

1. **Ensure connection** — check `agent-react-devtools status`. If the daemon is not running, start it with `agent-react-devtools start`. Use `agent-react-devtools wait --connected` to block until a React app connects.
2. **Inspect** — get the component tree, search for components, inspect props/state/hooks.
3. **Profile** — start profiling, trigger the interaction (or ask the user to), stop profiling, analyze results.
4. **Act** — use the data to fix the bug, optimize performance, or explain what's happening.

## Essential Commands

### Daemon

```bash
agent-react-devtools start              # Start daemon (auto-starts on first command)
agent-react-devtools stop               # Stop daemon
agent-react-devtools status             # Check connection, component count, last event
agent-react-devtools wait --connected   # Block until a React app connects
agent-react-devtools wait --component App # Block until a component appears
```

### Component Inspection

```bash
agent-react-devtools get tree           # Full component hierarchy (labels: @c1, @c2, ...)
agent-react-devtools get tree --depth 3 # Limit depth
agent-react-devtools get component @c5  # Props, state, hooks for a specific component
agent-react-devtools find Button        # Search by display name (fuzzy)
agent-react-devtools find Button --exact # Exact match
agent-react-devtools count              # Count by type: fn, cls, host, memo, ...
agent-react-devtools errors             # List components with errors or warnings
```

### Performance Profiling

```bash
agent-react-devtools profile start              # Start recording
agent-react-devtools profile stop               # Stop and collect data
