# react-data-fetching

Teaches your agent modern React data fetching: parallel requests, caching, deduplication, Suspense. Useful when components still fetch inside useEffect.

## What it does

The skill covers fetching, caching and syncing server data in React. It is framework-agnostic, so Vite + React Router, Next.js, Remix and custom setups all apply. The agent reaches for these patterns during code generation, review and refactoring, and when it spots a fetch-in-effect with no cache or dedup, it suggests a replacement.

Four topics, ordered by impact. Independent requests go through `Promise.all` instead of running one after another. Deferred `await` starts a promise early and waits only where the value is read. TanStack Query handles client-side data, including `QueryClientProvider` setup and `staleTime`. Suspense boundaries replace per-component `isLoading` flags. SWR gets a mention as the lighter option: it covers dedup, caching and revalidation, but complex mutation workflows need more.

The skill runs with a narrow toolset — `Read`, `Grep`, `Glob` — and triggers on `**/*.tsx` and `**/*.jsx` files. It will not edit your code, only advise. If you expect the agent to rewrite components on its own, that is worth checking against your permission settings.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-data-fetching -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-data-fetching/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-data-fetching/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-data-fetching -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-data-fetching/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-data-fetching -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-data-fetching/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills react-data-fetching
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-data-fetching/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-data-fetching -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/react-data-fetching
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-data-fetching/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-data-fetching -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- kill a request waterfall in a component
- replace `useEffect` + `fetch` with a cached data layer
- deduplicate identical requests fired by several components
- move loading states into Suspense boundaries
- pick between TanStack Query and SWR for a task

## Example prompts
- Review this component and remove the request waterfall — independent calls should run in parallel
- Rewrite the profile loading with TanStack Query, with caching and deduplication
- Replace the manual isLoading flags in this dashboard with Suspense boundaries

# React Data Fetching Patterns

## Table of Contents

- [When to Use](#when-to-use)
- [Instructions](#instructions)
- [Details](#details)
- [Source](#source)

Production-ready patterns for fetching, caching, and synchronizing server data in React applications. These patterns are framework-agnostic — they work whether you're using Vite + React Router, Next.js, Remix, or a custom setup.

## When to Use

Reference these patterns when:
- Adding data fetching to components
- Replacing `useEffect` + `fetch` with a proper data layer
- Implementing caching, deduplication, or optimistic updates
- Debugging waterfall loading patterns
- Choosing between data fetching libraries

## Instructions

- Apply these patterns during code generation, review, and refactoring. When you see fetch-in-effect without caching or deduplication, suggest the appropriate pattern.

## Details

### Overview

The most common performance problem in React apps is **request waterfalls** — sequential fetches that could run in parallel. The second most common problem is **redundant fetches** — multiple components fetching the same data independently. The patterns below address both, starting with the highest-impact fixes.

---

### 1. Parallelize Independent Fetches with `Promise.all`

**Impact: CRITICAL** — Eliminates sequential waterfalls for 2-10x improvement.

When multiple fetches have no dependencies on each other, run them concurrently.

**Avoid — sequential (3 round trips):**

```typescript
async function loadDashboard() {
  const user = await fetchUser()
  const posts = await fetchPosts()
  const notifications = await fetchNotifications()
  return { user, posts, notifications }
}
```

**Prefer — parallel (1 round trip):**

```typescript
async function loadDashboard() {
  const [user, posts, notifications] = await Promise.all([
    fetchUser(),
    fetchPosts(),
    fetchNotifications(),
  ])
  return { user, posts, notifications }
}
```

When fetches have partial dependencies (B depends on A, but C doesn't), start independent work immediately:

```typescript
async function loadPage() {
````
