## What it does

The skill kicks in when the agent designs a component API, builds a shared UI library, or refactors a component buried under props. It ships a set of patterns with code examples: replacing accumulated boolean props with composition, building compound components that share state through context, and splitting distinct modes into separate variant components.

One section covers swapping render props for children. The guidance keeps render props only where the parent has to hand data to the renderer, such as virtualized list items. Another pattern separates state implementation from UI so you can change state management without touching components.

The skill declares `context: fork` and access to `Read`, `Grep` and `Glob`, so it reads and searches code but never edits files. It applies to `**/*.tsx` and `**/*.jsx` paths. On a TypeScript or JSX codebase that means it will look at your shared components and tell you where the prop surface got out of hand — you still apply the changes yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-composition-2026 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-composition-2026/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-composition-2026/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-composition-2026 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-composition-2026/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-composition-2026 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-composition-2026/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills react-composition-2026
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-composition-2026/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-composition-2026 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/react-composition-2026
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-composition-2026/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill react-composition-2026 -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- strip accumulated boolean props from a component
- build a compound component that shares state via context
- split one mode-switching component into explicit variants
- replace render props with children
- design a component API other teams will consume

## Example prompts
- look at `Card.tsx` and show how to replace the boolean props with composition
- refactor `Select` into a compound component using context
- review the components in `src/ui` for rigid APIs and suggest a composition pattern

# Modern React Composition Patterns

## Table of Contents

Composition patterns for building flexible, maintainable React components that scale. These patterns replace boolean-prop proliferation, rigid component APIs, and tangled state with composable, explicit designs.

## When to Use

Reference these patterns when:
- A component has more than 3-4 boolean props controlling its behavior
- Building reusable UI components or a shared component library
- Refactoring components that are difficult to extend
- Designing component APIs that other teams will consume
- Reviewing component architecture for flexibility and maintainability

## Instructions

- Apply these patterns during component design, code generation, and review. When you see boolean prop accumulation or rigid component APIs, suggest the appropriate composition pattern.

## Details

### Overview

The core principle: **composition over configuration**. Instead of adding boolean props and conditional branches to handle every variant, compose smaller, focused components together. This makes components easier to understand, test, and extend — for both humans and AI agents.

---

### 1. Replace Boolean Props with Composition

**Impact: HIGH** — Prevents combinatorial explosion and makes intent explicit.

Boolean props multiply complexity: 4 booleans = 16 possible states, most of which are untested. Replace them with composable children.

**Avoid — boolean prop accumulation:**

```tsx
<Card
  showHeader
  showFooter
  collapsible
  bordered
  withShadow
  headerAction="close"
  size="large"
/>
```

**Prefer — explicit composition:**

```tsx
<Card variant="bordered" shadow="md">
  <Card.Header>
    <h3>Title</h3>
    <Card.CloseButton />
  </Card.Header>
  <Card.Body collapsible>
    <p>Content here</p>
  </Card.Body>
  <Card.Footer>
    <Button>Save</Button>
  </Card.Footer>
</Card>
```

Each piece is explicit, testable, and independently optional.

---

### 2. Build Compound Components with Context

**Impact: HIGH** — Shared implicit state without prop drilling.
