# react-best-practices

A skill that audits React and Next.js performance: it traces request waterfalls, extra bundle JS, server-client boundary mistakes and wasted rerenders.

## What it does

The skill sorts React and Next.js performance into eight categories with priorities attached, from async request cascades and bundle weight down to rerenders and small JS tweaks. Every category owns a rule prefix (`async-`, `bundle-`, `server-`, `client-`, `rerender-`, `rendering-`, `js-`, `advanced-`), so a rule is easy to look up by name.

Support material ships as a few reference files plus a deep catalog in `AGENTS.md` with 45 rules. You do not start from the catalog. First comes `references/perf-triage-modes.md`, which pushes the task into one narrow scenario, then the measurement checklist, while `references/boundaries-and-route-outs.md` hands adjacent ground such as state management and accessibility to other skills. It stays off their turf.

The order of fixes is fixed. Kill waterfalls first, then cut route JS and heavy client components, then hydration and third-party scripts, and rerenders last. Measurement comes before any of it: the skill warns outright that React Compiler and bundle analyzers have changed what the old heuristics are worth, so blanket memoization is not on the menu. Expect to open a profiler before you touch code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill react-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill react-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill react-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills react-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill react-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/react-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill react-best-practices -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- trace a request waterfall on a slow route
- cut JS weight off a heavy client component
- explain why an App Router page loads slowly
- fix a hydration mismatch that flickers the markup
- clean up rerender churn after a state change

## Example prompts
- Profile this App Router route, my API calls run one after another instead of in parallel
- Audit `app/dashboard/page.tsx` — the client component pulls in way too much JavaScript
- Why does my markup flicker after hydration? Run the measurement checklist on it

# Vercel React Best Practices

Measurement-led React and Next.js performance skill for routing slow-page work into the right packet before refactoring. The canonical focus is waterfalls, bundle weight, RSC or client-boundary mistakes, hydration/script cost, and rerender churn; the deep `AGENTS.md` remains available, but day-to-day use should start from the lighter reference bundle and route-outs.

## When to use this skill

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing new React components or Next.js pages
- Implementing data fetching (client or server-side)
- Reviewing code for performance issues
- Refactoring existing React/Next.js code
- Optimizing bundle size or load times

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Eliminating Waterfalls | CRITICAL | `async-` |
| 2 | Bundle Size Optimization | CRITICAL | `bundle-` |
| 3 | Server-Side Performance | HIGH | `server-` |
| 4 | Client-Side Data Fetching | MEDIUM-HIGH | `client-` |
| 5 | Re-render Optimization | MEDIUM | `rerender-` |
| 6 | Rendering Performance | MEDIUM | `rendering-` |
| 7 | JavaScript Performance | LOW-MEDIUM | `js-` |
| 8 | Advanced Patterns | LOW | `advanced-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Eliminating Waterfalls (CRITICAL)

- `async-defer-await` - Move await into branches where actually used
- `async-parallel` - Use Promise.all() for independent operations
- `async-dependencies` - Use better-all for partial dependencies
- `async-api-routes` - Start promises early, await late in API routes
- `async-suspense-boundaries` - Use Suspense to stream content

### 2. Bundle Size Optimization (CRITICAL)
