## What it does

The skill walks through the choice between RevenueCat and wiring Google Play Billing Library directly on Android. It ships three tables: client side, server side, and the list of work that stays yours either way. Reading them tells you which code disappears, which pieces move to the RevenueCat backend, and which ones never move at all.

A heuristic section turns those tables into a decision. If you need subscription deferral, revocation, or an alternative billing program RevenueCat does not cover, the skill advises keeping a raw PBL path for those specific calls. Auth, your own user database, paywall UI and the premium content gate on your API stay yours in both cases — passing `appUserID` and checking entitlements through the REST API or webhooks is still on you.

It is worth installing while you are actually weighing the two paths and don't want to hold a dozen comparison points in your head. If you already run a mature billing backend with verified tokens and tested state handling, the gain is smaller, and that is a good reason to weigh the client side simplifications and dashboard driven catalog honestly.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RevenueCat/ai-toolkit rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --path revenuecat-play-billing/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RevenueCat/ai-toolkit/tree/HEAD/revenuecat-play-billing/skills/rc-revenuecat-vs-raw-billing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether to build your own receipt verification service or hand it to RevenueCat
- see which BillingClient pieces stay in the app after a switch
- size the server work: RTDN, subscription state machine, token deduplication
- find the cases where raw Google Play Billing is still the only option
- confirm auth and the premium content gate remain on your side

## Example prompts
- Compare RevenueCat and raw Google Play Billing for our Android app: what moves into the SDK and what stays ours
- We already have a billing backend with token verification — is switching to RevenueCat worth it?
- We need subscription deferral and revocation. What has to stay on direct Google Play API calls?

# RevenueCat vs Raw Google Play Billing

## Phase 0: Intent

Use this skill when you are choosing between integrating RevenueCat or wiring Google Play Billing Library (PBL) directly, and you need to see which concerns disappear, which shift, and which still land on your team. The decision covers both the Android client and any server side infrastructure that supports subscriptions or one time purchases.

Typical questions this skill answers:

- If I adopt RevenueCat, what client code no longer exists in my app?
- What backend pieces (receipt verification, RTDN, state machine) does RevenueCat replace?
- What do I still own regardless of which path I pick?
- Is there a concern where raw PBL is the only option today?

## Phase 1: Locate the Concern

Before reading the tables, identify what you are actually evaluating. Sort your requirement into one of these buckets and jump to the matching section:

| Bucket | Examples | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Client purchase plumbing | BillingClient, listeners, acknowledgement, consumption | Client side table |
| Server purchase truth | Token validation, RTDN, entitlement state machine | Server side table |
| Out of scope for either | Auth, your user DB, paywall UI, push | Your responsibility table |

If the concern is split (for example, RevenueCat verifies the token but you still need to gate premium content on your API), you own the integration glue even though the verification itself is handled.

## Phase 2: Side by Side Reference

### Client side

| Concern | Raw PBL | RevenueCat |
|---|---|---|
| BillingClient setup and configuration | You write | Handled internally |
