## What it does

This skill documents the support status of Google Play alternative billing in RevenueCat Android SDK. It walks through four programs — User Choice Billing, Alternative Billing Only, External Offers and External Payment Links — and what each demands from your app. Per the handbook chapter, RevenueCat's coverage of these programs is limited, so check the changelog for newer SDK releases before you start.

The work runs in three phases. Discovery first: which program you target, whether your app is eligible in the region, and whether you actually want RevenueCat Web Billing instead. Then the plan — wait for first-class SDK support or hand-roll the integration against the Play Billing Library. On the second path the skill points to `PurchasesAreCompletedBy.MY_APP`, which keeps purchase acknowledgement in your hands so the SDK does not double-handle it.

Inside you get a coverage table per flow, planning and verification checklists, and Kotlin snippets. There is also a section on the case that is not Google alternative billing at all: selling through RevenueCat's hosted web checkout via `Offering.webCheckoutURL` or `Package.webCheckoutURL`. The catch worth knowing up front — the RevenueCat SDK owns the `BillingClient` instance, so raw Play Billing calls alongside it need care.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-alternative-billing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rc-alternative-billing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-alternative-billing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-alternative-billing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RevenueCat/ai-toolkit rc-alternative-billing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-alternative-billing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --path revenuecat-play-billing/skills/rc-alternative-billing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RevenueCat/ai-toolkit --skill rc-alternative-billing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RevenueCat/ai-toolkit/tree/HEAD/revenuecat-play-billing/skills/rc-alternative-billing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- work out which Google Play alternative billing programs the RevenueCat SDK supports
- decide between waiting for SDK support and hand-rolling the Play Billing Library integration
- keep purchase acknowledgement from being handled twice by your app and the SDK
- tell Google's alternative billing programs apart from RevenueCat Web Billing
- verify that alternative-path purchases reach your backend and reconcile with subscriber state

## Example prompts
- Help me scope a User Choice Billing integration with RevenueCat Android SDK 10.x
- Which alternative billing flows does RevenueCat abstract, and which do I implement with the Play Billing Library?
- Set up PurchasesAreCompletedBy.MY_APP for a hand-rolled alternative billing integration

# Alternative Billing Programs

Google runs several programs that let you collect payment outside standard Play Store billing. This skill tells you which pieces the RevenueCat Android SDK covers today and which ones you implement yourself against the Play Billing Library.

Per the handbook chapter, RevenueCat has limited support for these programs as of SDK 9.x. Treat that as the status of record; check the RevenueCat changelog for any newer SDK releases before you start work.

## Phase 1: Discovery

Answer these before writing any code.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which program are you targeting? | User Choice Billing, Alternative Billing Only, External Offers, and External Payment Links each have different Play requirements. |
| Is your app eligible in the target region? | Google gates these programs by country and app category. You enroll through Play Console, not through RevenueCat. |
| Are you using RevenueCat Web Billing instead? | RevenueCat's web checkout is a separate product from Google's alternative billing. Do not conflate the two. |
| Which RevenueCat SDK version are you on? | Support evolves per release. What is unsupported in SDK 9.x may land later. |

If you actually want to sell subscriptions via a RevenueCat-hosted web checkout, that is not one of Google's alternative billing programs. Use `Offering.webCheckoutURL` or `Package.webCheckoutURL`:

```kotlin
val pkg = offerings.current?.monthly
pkg?.webCheckoutURL?.let { url ->
