# design-system

Builds or audits a design system: tokens, component library, naming conventions, contribution model and docs. Useful when products drift apart visually.

## What it does

The skill works in five stacked layers: foundations (tokens), elements (atoms), components (molecules and organisms), patterns (page templates), and documentation with governance. Each layer feeds the one above, so tokens come first and components sit on top of them. For tokens it suggests a two-tier setup: base values like `color-blue-600` plus semantic names like `color-text-link`, with components referencing the semantic tier.

A new system follows a set order: inventory the existing UI, spot duplicates, define foundations, audit elements, build the library, pick priority components, document patterns, set governance, then migrate surfaces gradually. An audit takes a different route — what is documented, what lives in Figma, what is in code, what production actually uses, then gaps, divergent implementations, component drift and fix priorities.

The skill stays stack-agnostic in principle: structure and governance carry over, while implementation depends on your tools — Figma, Storybook, a code library. It expects inputs: brand identity, product surfaces, team tooling, existing components, and constraints such as accessibility and browser support. If brand identity is undefined, run `brand-identity` first, because tokens depend on it. A single page or component is a job for `design-standards` instead.

## Requirements
- Works with: Figma

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill design-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill design-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill design-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rampstackco/claude-skills design-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill design-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills --path skills/design-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill design-system -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- build a design system from scratch without losing track of layers
- find duplicate components across the product
- define tokens at the system level, not per page
- separate base tokens from semantic ones
- set a contribution model and a system owner

## Example prompts
- Build a design system for our product, starting with foundations and tokens
- Audit our existing design system: where are the gaps and where do Figma and code diverge
- Structure our component library into elements, components and patterns

# Design System

Build, evolve, or audit a design system. Stack-agnostic in principle. Implementation is stack-specific (Figma, Storybook, code library, etc.) but the structure and governance principles transfer.

This skill is for building the system. For applying a system to specific pages or components, use `design-standards`. For brand visual identity, use `brand-identity`.

---

## When to use

- Building a design system from scratch
- Auditing an existing system for gaps or fragmentation
- Defining design tokens at the system level
- Structuring a component library
- Establishing contribution and governance models
- Migrating from ad-hoc components to a documented system

## When NOT to use

- Designing a single page or component (use `design-standards`)
- Brand identity work (use `brand-identity`)
- Component-level frontend implementation (use `frontend-component-build`)
- Pure design documentation for marketing (use `brand-style-guide`)

---

## Required inputs

- The brand identity (tokens, voice, imagery direction)
- The product surfaces the system needs to support (web, mobile, marketing, app, internal tools)
- The team and its working tools (Figma, code framework, doc platform)
- Existing components, even if undocumented
- Constraints (accessibility requirements, performance targets, browser support)

If brand identity is undefined, run `brand-identity` first.

---

## The framework: 5 layers

A complete design system has five layers, stacked. Each layer feeds the layer above.
