## What it does

The skill breaks identity into five elements: a logo system, color, typography, imagery direction, and iconography with motion principles. Each one comes with rules rather than vague advice — which mark variants you need, how to document a color, what belongs in a font fallback stack. Checks are concrete too: the logo has to hold up at 16 pixels and reproduce in a single color, colors get a WCAG AA contrast test, and neutrals are treated as the bulk of the surface area.

It stays stack-agnostic and tool-agnostic. The skill expects an approved brand direction — positioning, mood, name — and points you to `brand-ideation` if that work isn't done. Documenting a finished system is `brand-style-guide`, voice and tone is `brand-voice`, and UI components built from an existing brand fall to `design-standards` or `design-system`.

It doubles as an audit: the skill looks for mismatches between elements and for gaps like a missing wordmark or glyph, which tend to surface at launch. One caveat — the source file cuts off inside the iconography section, so the grid and stroke-weight details aren't spelled out there.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-identity -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brand-identity/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-identity -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-identity -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rampstackco/claude-skills brand-identity
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-identity -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills --path skills/brand-identity
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-identity -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/brand-identity/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a logo system with wordmark, glyph and monogram
- build a palette with contrast checks and disallowed pairings
- pick typefaces and write a fallback stack for when the brand font fails
- set photography and illustration direction so the brand stops drifting
- audit an existing identity for cohesion and missing pieces

## Example prompts
- Design a logo system for the brand: primary mark, wordmark, glyph and monogram
- Build a palette with hex, RGB and WCAG AA contrast checks
- Audit our identity for cohesion and tell me what's missing

# Brand Identity

Design or evaluate the visual artifacts that express a brand: logo system, color, typography, imagery, iconography, and motion. Stack-agnostic. Tool-agnostic.

This skill assumes a brand direction is already approved (positioning, mood, name). If not, run `brand-ideation` first.

---

## When to use

- Designing a logo system
- Defining a brand color palette
- Choosing brand typography
- Developing iconography or illustration style
- Defining imagery direction (photography, illustration)
- Establishing motion principles
- Auditing an existing identity for cohesion or gaps

## When NOT to use

- Brand direction is not yet defined (use `brand-ideation`)
- Documenting a finished system (use `brand-style-guide`)
- Defining voice and tone (use `brand-voice`)
- Building UI components from an existing brand (use `design-standards` or `design-system`)

---

## Required inputs

- The brand name and approved positioning
- The mood direction (from ideation, or supplied as references)
- Audience and category context
- Application contexts (web, print, packaging, motion - whatever applies)
- Constraints (parent brand requirements, regulatory marks, accessibility minimums)

---

## The framework: 5 elements

A complete identity has five elements. Each element should reinforce the others. Inconsistency between them is the most common identity failure.

### 1. Logo system

Most brands need not one logo but a system of marks for different contexts.

**Components of a logo system:**

- **Primary mark.** The main logo. Used wherever there is room.
- **Wordmark.** Just the typography, no symbol. Used in tight horizontal contexts.
