## What it does

The skill reads a PRD, either a markdown file or plain text, and writes beads into `.beads/beads.jsonl`. It first pulls Quality Gates from that section of the PRD: commands that must pass for every story, plus separate checks for UI work. Then it creates one epic for the feature and a child bead per user story, appending those gates to the acceptance criteria.

Beads are created with `bd create` using HEREDOC syntax, and dependencies go in through `bd dep add`. The order is schema, then backend, then UI. ralph-tui marks blocked beads and skips them until their dependencies close. The result is ready for `ralph-tui run --tracker beads`.

Story size is where this breaks. ralph-tui spawns a fresh agent instance each iteration with no memory of earlier work, so a story has to fit one context window. If you cannot describe the change in two or three sentences, split it. The skill ships with ralph-tui's Beads tracker plugin, so it is tied to that tracker.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install subsy/ralph-tui ralph-tui-create-beads
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/subsy/ralph-tui --path skills/ralph-tui-create-beads
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/subsy/ralph-tui/tree/HEAD/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a PRD into an epic and child beads
- pull Quality Gates into each bead's acceptance criteria
- order beads by dependency: schema, backend, UI
- break a large feature into stories that fit one iteration
- prepare a task set for `ralph-tui run --tracker beads`

## Example prompts
- Take the PRD at `tasks/friends-outreach-prd.md` and create beads for ralph-tui
- Convert this PRD to beads: one epic plus a bead per user story
- Create beads for ralph and wire up the dependencies between them

# Ralph TUI - Create Beads

Converts PRDs to beads (epic + child tasks) for ralph-tui autonomous execution.

> **Note:** This skill is bundled with ralph-tui's Beads tracker plugin. Future tracker plugins (Linear, GitHub Issues, etc.) will bundle their own task creation skills.

---

## The Job

Take a PRD (markdown file or text) and create beads in `.beads/beads.jsonl`:
1. **Extract Quality Gates** from the PRD's "Quality Gates" section
2. Create an **epic** bead for the feature
3. Create **child beads** for each user story (with quality gates appended)
4. Set up **dependencies** between beads (schema → backend → UI)
5. Output ready for `ralph-tui run --tracker beads`

---

## Step 1: Extract Quality Gates

Look for the "Quality Gates" section in the PRD:

```markdown
## Quality Gates
These commands must pass for every user story:
- `pnpm typecheck` - Type checking
- `pnpm lint` - Linting
For UI stories, also include:
- Verify in browser using dev-browser skill
```

Extract:
- **Universal gates:** Commands that apply to ALL stories (e.g., `pnpm typecheck`)
- **UI gates:** Commands that apply only to UI stories (e.g., browser verification)

**If no Quality Gates section exists:** Ask the user what commands should pass, or use a sensible default like `npm run typecheck`.

---

## Output Format

Beads use `bd create` command with **HEREDOC syntax** to safely handle special characters:

```bash
# Create epic (link back to source PRD)
bd create --type=epic \
  --title="[Feature Name]" \
  --description="$(cat <<'EOF'
[Feature description from PRD]
EOF
)" \
  --external-ref="prd:./tasks/feature-name-prd.md"
# Create child bead (with quality gates in acceptance criteria)
bd create \
  --parent=EPIC_ID \
  --title="[Story Title]" \
  --description="$(cat <<'EOF'
[Story description with acceptance criteria INCLUDING quality gates]
EOF
)" \
  --priority=[1-4]
```

> **CRITICAL:** Always use `<<'EOF'` (single-quoted) for the HEREDOC delimiter. This prevents shell interpretation of backticks, `$variables`, and `()` in descriptions.

---

## Story Size: The #1 Rule

**Each story must be completable in ONE ralph-tui iteration (~one agent context window).**

ralph-tui spawns a fresh agent instance per iteration with no memory of previous work. If a story is too big, the agent runs out of context before finishing.

### Right-sized stories:
- Add a database column + migration

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 32e20a187338f6de tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
