Turns a PRD into an epic plus child beads through the br CLI, so ralph-tui can run the tasks on its own.

## What it does

The skill reads a PRD as markdown or plain text and splits it into beads: one epic for the feature, one child bead per user story. It drives the `br` command from beads-rust. If you have the original beads with `bd` installed instead, reach for `ralph-tui-create-beads`.

It starts by pulling the Quality Gates section out of the PRD and separating universal commands from UI-only ones. Then it creates the epic with `br create --type=epic`, links it back to the source PRD through `--external-ref`, and adds child beads whose acceptance criteria carry the gates. Dependencies go in with `br dep add <issue> <depends-on>` — schema first, backend next, UI last. Descriptions are passed through HEREDOC, and the delimiter has to stay single-quoted, otherwise the shell eats backticks and `$variables` inside the text.

Story size is where this breaks. ralph-tui spawns a fresh agent instance per iteration with no memory of earlier work, so each story has to fit one context window. If you cannot describe the change in two or three sentences, split it. The finished set feeds `ralph-tui run --tracker beads-rust`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads-rust -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads-rust -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads-rust -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install subsy/ralph-tui ralph-tui-create-beads-rust
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads-rust -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/subsy/ralph-tui --path skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add subsy/ralph-tui --skill ralph-tui-create-beads-rust -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/subsy/ralph-tui/tree/HEAD/skills/ralph-tui-create-beads-rust/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a PRD into an epic and child beads
- pull quality gates from the PRD into acceptance criteria
- order stories by dependency: schema, backend, UI
- break an oversized feature into single-iteration stories
- prepare tasks for a ralph-tui run with the beads-rust tracker

## Example prompts
- Take the PRD at `./tasks/friends-outreach-prd.md` and create beads with `br`
- Create the epic and child beads for this PRD, dependencies in order
- Split this feature into stories sized for one ralph-tui iteration

# Ralph TUI - Create Beads (beads-rust)

Converts PRDs to beads (epic + child tasks) for ralph-tui autonomous execution using **beads-rust** (`br` CLI).

> **Note:** This skill uses the `br` command from beads-rust. If you have the original beads (`bd`) installed instead, use the `ralph-tui-create-beads` skill.

---

## The Job

Take a PRD (markdown file or text) and create beads using `br` commands:
1. **Extract Quality Gates** from the PRD's "Quality Gates" section
2. Create an **epic** bead for the feature
3. Create **child beads** for each user story (with quality gates appended)
4. Set up **dependencies** between beads (schema → backend → UI)
5. Output ready for `ralph-tui run --tracker beads-rust`

---

## Step 1: Extract Quality Gates

Look for the "Quality Gates" section in the PRD:

```markdown
## Quality Gates
These commands must pass for every user story:
- `pnpm typecheck` - Type checking
- `pnpm lint` - Linting
For UI stories, also include:
- Verify in browser using dev-browser skill
```

Extract:
- **Universal gates:** Commands that apply to ALL stories (e.g., `pnpm typecheck`)
- **UI gates:** Commands that apply only to UI stories (e.g., browser verification)

**If no Quality Gates section exists:** Ask the user what commands should pass, or use a sensible default like `npm run typecheck`.

---

## Output Format

Beads use `br create` command with **HEREDOC syntax** to safely handle special characters:

```bash
# Create epic (link back to source PRD)
br create --type=epic \
  --title="[Feature Name]" \
  --description="$(cat <<'EOF'
[Feature description from PRD]
EOF
)" \
  --external-ref="prd:./tasks/feature-name-prd.md"
# Create child bead (with quality gates in acceptance criteria)
br create \
  --parent=EPIC_ID \
  --title="[Story Title]" \
  --description="$(cat <<'EOF'
[Story description with acceptance criteria INCLUDING quality gates]
EOF
)" \
  --priority=[1-4]
```

> **CRITICAL:** Always use `<<'EOF'` (single-quoted) for the HEREDOC delimiter. This prevents shell interpretation of backticks, `$variables`, and `()` in descriptions.
