## What it does

The skill covers 9 categories and 30 rules: core RAG, embeddings, contextual retrieval, HyDE, agentic RAG, multimodal retrieval, query decomposition, reranking and pgvector. Rule files sit in `rules/` and load on demand, so only the relevant ones reach the context.

There is real detail inside: RRF fusion with k=60 for semantic plus keyword search, 512-token chunks, a 40% BM25 / 60% vector weight split, HNSW indexes in PostgreSQL. HyDE ships with a 2–3s timeout that falls back to embedding the query directly, and cross-encoder reranking with `ms-marco-MiniLM` runs in about 50ms.

You do not invoke it by hand: `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true` are set. It activates through path patterns `**/rag/**`, `**/retrieval/**`, `**/embeddings/**`, `**/vector/**`. If your repo keeps code elsewhere, auto-activation will not fire — worth checking your layout before installing.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill rag-retrieval -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rag-retrieval/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill rag-retrieval -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill rag-retrieval -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yonatangross/orchestkit rag-retrieval
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill rag-retrieval -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yonatangross/orchestkit --path src/skills/rag-retrieval
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill rag-retrieval -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yonatangross/orchestkit/tree/HEAD/src/skills/rag-retrieval/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a RAG pipeline that cites its sources
- pick an embedding model and chunk size
- fuse semantic and keyword search with RRF
- add HyDE when queries miss the document vocabulary
- set up hybrid search on pgvector with an HNSW index

## Example prompts
- help me design a RAG pipeline over our docs folder
- how do I set up hybrid search in pgvector with RRF fusion
- add reranking on top of the vector search results

# RAG Retrieval

Comprehensive patterns for building production RAG systems. Each category has individual rule files in `rules/` loaded on-demand.

House thresholds, fusion ordering, and the latency and quality budgets we assert live in
[House delta](#house-delta) below. Vendor documentation is linked, not restated (see
[Upstream coverage](#upstream-coverage-do-not-restate)).
