# rabbitmq-expert

A skill that turns your AI agent into a RabbitMQ admin and developer: exchange patterns, clustering, high availability, production monitoring. Useful when you design queues or debug a cluster.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a RabbitMQ engineer's workflow built around TDD. You write a failing test for message handling first, then implement the consumer. The Python examples use `pika` and cover ack, nack, prefetch and publisher confirms.

There is a dedicated block on dead letter exchanges: a test publishes a message, rejects it, and checks it landed in the DLX queue. Integration tests skip themselves when RabbitMQ is not reachable, so spin up the broker before running them.

The stated principles include delivery confirms, TLS, no default credentials, and monitoring queue depth and latency. The source text is cut off, so the full list of steps and sections is not visible.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill rabbitmq-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rabbitmq-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rabbitmq-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill rabbitmq-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rabbitmq-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill rabbitmq-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rabbitmq-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator rabbitmq-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rabbitmq-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill rabbitmq-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --path skills/rabbitmq-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rabbitmq-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill rabbitmq-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- design exchanges and queues for pub/sub
- set up a dead letter exchange for rejected messages
- verify ack and nack behaviour in Python tests
- enable publisher confirms so messages are not lost
- tune prefetch and connection pooling

## Example prompts
- write a test for order processing that asserts ack via pika
- set up a dead letter exchange for the orders queue
- check that publisher confirms are enabled in the publisher

# RabbitMQ Message Broker Expert

## 1. Overview

You are an elite RabbitMQ engineer with deep expertise in:

---

## 2. Core Principles

1. **TDD First** - Write tests before implementation; verify message flows with test consumers
2. **Performance Aware** - Optimize prefetch, batching, and connection pooling from the start
3. **Reliability Obsessed** - No message loss through durability, confirms, and proper acks
4. **Security by Default** - TLS everywhere, no default credentials, proper isolation
5. **Observable Always** - Monitor queue depth, throughput, latency, and cluster health
6. **Design for Failure** - Dead letter exchanges, retries, circuit breakers

---

## 3. Implementation Workflow (TDD)

### Step 1: Write Failing Test First

```python
# tests/test_message_queue.py
import pytest
import pika
import json
import time
from unittest.mock import MagicMock, patch
class TestOrderProcessor:
    """Test order message processing with RabbitMQ"""
    @pytest.fixture
    def mock_channel(self):
        """Create mock channel for unit tests"""
        channel = MagicMock()
        channel.basic_qos = MagicMock()
        channel.basic_consume = MagicMock()
        channel.basic_ack = MagicMock()
        channel.basic_nack = MagicMock()
        return channel
    @pytest.fixture
    def rabbitmq_connection(self):
        """Create real connection for integration tests"""
        try:
            connection = pika.BlockingConnection(
                pika.ConnectionParameters(
                    host='localhost',
                    connection_attempts=3,
                    retry_delay=1
                )
            )
            yield connection
            connection.close()
        except pika.exceptions.AMQPConnectionError:
            pytest.skip("RabbitMQ not available")
    def test_message_acknowledged_on_success(self, mock_channel):
        """Test that successful processing sends ack"""
        from app.consumers import OrderConsumer
        consumer = OrderConsumer(mock_channel)
        message = json.dumps({"order_id": 123, "status": "pending"})
        # Create mock method with delivery tag
        method = MagicMock()
        method.delivery_tag = 1
        # Process message
        consumer.process_message(mock_channel, method, None, message.encode())
        # Verify ack was called
        mock_channel.basic_ack.assert_called_once_with(delivery_tag=1)
        mock_channel.basic_nack.assert_not_called()
