# r-package-check

Runs release gate checks for R packages using tests, doc builds, and R CMD check. It writes readiness reports to quality_reports/.

## What it does

The skill handles the pre-release audit for R packages. It inspects installed tools and regenerates `man/` and `NAMESPACE` via `devtools::document()`. Committed documentation that drifts from roxygen tags gets flagged. Tests run next via `devtools::test()`. Then comes `R CMD check --as-cran`.

Long checks run in the background. The skill starts the `Monitor` tool or a background Bash job with piped logs so the assistant does not block on CRAN tests. It also calls the `r-package-reviewer` agent to audit source code directly.

Missing `devtools` or `roxygen2` will halt execution during pre-flight checks. The skill produces a checklist in `quality_reports/[package]_package_check.md`. It never bumps the version or uploads to CRAN.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill r-package-check -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/r-package-check/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill r-package-check -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill r-package-check -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow r-package-check
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill r-package-check -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --path .claude/skills/r-package-check
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill r-package-check -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/r-package-check/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rebuild man/ and NAMESPACE without manual edits
- detect documentation drift against committed roxygen blocks
- execute R CMD check --as-cran in the background with streamed logs
- triage CRAN policy warnings and notes before submission
- generate release reports inside quality_reports/

## Example prompts
- Check my R package for CRAN readiness
- Run devtools::check on this package
- Prepare for CRAN submission and generate the report

name: r-package-check
description: Run the full R package release gate — regenerate docs, run the test suite, run R CMD check --as-cran, and triage every ERROR / WARNING / NOTE against CRAN policy before a release or submission. Use when the user says "check my R package", "R CMD check", "is this package CRAN-ready", "run devtools::check", "prepare for CRAN submission", or points at a directory containing a DESCRIPTION file. Produces a check report + CRAN-submission checklist in `quality_reports/`.

# `/r-package-check` — R Package Release Gate

Run the document → test → check → triage pipeline that decides whether an R package is releasable, then review the source for the issues `R CMD check` cannot see.

**Input:** `$ARGUMENTS` — the package root (a directory containing `DESCRIPTION`). If blank, autodetect by searching upward/within the working directory for `DESCRIPTION`.

---

## Constraints

- **Follow [`.claude/rules/r-package-conventions.md`](../../rules/r-package-conventions.md)** — the CRAN-readiness bar (0 errors, 0 warnings, explained notes) is the gate.
- **Treat `man/` and `NAMESPACE` as generated** — regenerate with `devtools::document()`; never hand-edit them.
- **Run the `r-package-reviewer` agent** on the source before declaring the package releasable.
- **Do not bump the version or write to CRAN.** This skill *checks*; the human decides when to submit.

## Workflow Phases

### Phase 0: Pre-Flight Report

```markdown
## Pre-Flight Report — R Package Check
**Package:** [name + version from DESCRIPTION]
**Root:** [path]
**Exported functions:** [from NAMESPACE / `@export` count]
**Dependencies:** Imports [list] · Suggests [list] · Depends [list]
**Toolchain available:** devtools [✓/✗], roxygen2 [✓/✗], testthat [✓/✗], R CMD [✓/✗], covr [✓/✗]
**Plan:** document → test → check --as-cran → triage → review
```

Detect the toolchain with a quick probe; if `devtools`/`R CMD` is missing, stop and tell the user what to install.

```bash
Rscript -e 'cat("devtools:", requireNamespace("devtools", quietly=TRUE),
               "roxygen2:", requireNamespace("roxygen2", quietly=TRUE),
               "testthat:", requireNamespace("testthat", quietly=TRUE),
               "covr:", requireNamespace("covr", quietly=TRUE), "\n")'
```

### Phase 1: Document

Regenerate `man/` + `NAMESPACE` and detect drift (generated docs that were not committed):

```bash
Rscript -e 'devtools::document("[pkg]")'
git -C "[pkg]" status --short man/ NAMESPACE   # any diff = generated docs were stale
```
