## What it does

The skill compares your installed version in `version.json` with the upstream GitHub repository. It relies on semver matching and outputs `{"has_update": true}` whenever a newer tag appears. Other components in the `qwencloud/qwencloud-ai` bundle delegate update tasks directly to this tool.

Network calls stay throttled to once every 24 hours. The last check timestamp is saved in `<repo_root>/.agents/state.json`, shared with `gossamer.py`. If you need an instant check, pass the `--force` flag to `scripts/check_update.py`. Without Python 3.9+ and `curl` installed on the system, the script fails. You can point checks to a fork using `QWEN_SKILLS_REPO`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-update-check -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/qwencloud-update-check/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-update-check -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-update-check -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai qwencloud-update-check
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-update-check -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --path skills/ops/qwencloud-update-check
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-update-check -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai/tree/HEAD/skills/ops/qwencloud-update-check/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- track new releases of the qwencloud-ai skill collection
- rate-limit version lookups to avoid repetitive GitHub requests
- delegate version checks across related assistant skills

## Example prompts
- Check if there is a newer version of qwencloud-ai
- Check update status for my installed qwen skills
- Run qwencloud-update-check with the --force flag

# Qwen Update Checker

Automatic version checker for the **qwencloud/qwencloud-ai** skill pack. Compares the locally installed version against the latest release on GitHub and notifies the user when an update is available.

This skill is referenced by all other qwencloud/qwencloud-ai. When any skill runs, it checks if this skill is installed and delegates version checking here.

## How It Works

1. Reads the installed version from `version.json` (the `version` field bundled with this skill).
2. Fetches the latest version from the remote repository (GitHub raw content).
3. Compares versions using semver. Returns `{"has_update": true}` if a newer version exists.
4. Records the check timestamp (`last_interaction`) in `<repo_root>/.agents/state.json` to rate-limit network requests to once every 24 hours.

## Usage

Other skills invoke this script automatically. You can also run it manually:

```bash
python3 <path-to-this-skill>/scripts/check_update.py --print-response
```

### CLI Arguments

| Argument | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| `--print-response` | Print result as formatted JSON to stdout |
| `--force` | Bypass 24-hour rate limit and check immediately |

### Output Format

```json
{
  "has_update": true
}
```

## Configuration

| Environment Variable | Default | Description |
|---------------------|---------|-------------|
| `QWEN_SKILLS_REPO` | `qwencloud/qwencloud-ai` | GitHub repo for remote version check |

## State File

The `last_interaction` timestamp is stored at `<repo_root>/.agents/state.json` for rate-limiting. Check results are **not** cached in the state file. This file persists across sessions and is shared with `gossamer.py` for fatigue control.

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 39ecea1c786d4f75 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
