# qwencloud-model-selector

This skill recommends which Qwen model and parameters fit your task. Handy when you are unsure what is cheaper or what your key can actually reach.

## What it does

Two modes. In interactive advisory the skill asks diagnostic questions and narrows down a model from your answers. The second mode is a fast path for execution skills that need a model decision with no user in the loop: it pulls the recommendation snapshot from the CDN first and falls back to the local copy under `cdn/` if that request fails.

Model catalogs and pricing come from the CDN, with local fallbacks used only on network failure. Real-time availability, exact prices and account quotas need the QwenCloud CLI and Node.js >= 18. Check with `qwencloud version`, install with `npm install -g @qwencloud/qwencloud-cli`. Skip the CLI and you still get snapshot answers, but you cannot verify what is available right now.

One rule is absolute: if you or the calling skill already named a model, the selector leaves it alone and adds no parameters such as thinking mode. It also keeps two credential systems apart — an API key (`sk-...` or `sk-sp-...`) for model calls, and a CLI session for `qwencloud` subcommands. A `Not authenticated` error means the browser device-flow login, not an API key. Credential values are never printed, only status.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-model-selector -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-model-selector -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-model-selector -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai qwencloud-model-selector
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-model-selector -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --path skills/models/qwencloud-model-selector
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/qwencloud-model-selector/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QwenCloud/qwencloud-ai --skill qwencloud-model-selector -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pick a Qwen model for a specific task
- compare Qwen model pricing before committing
- find out which models are on Token Plan
- review cost history for the account
- hand a model choice to another skill without asking the user

## Example prompts
- use qwencloud-model-selector to pick a Qwen model for code generation
- which Qwen models are available on my Token Plan?
- compare Qwen model pricing and tell me what is cheaper for long prompts

# Qwen Model Selector (Advisor)

This skill operates in two modes:

1. **Interactive advisory** — asks diagnostic questions to recommend the right model (see Diagnostic Flow).
2. **Cross-skill resolution** — provides a fast-path model lookup for execution skills that need a model
   decision without user interaction. Fetch the
   [CDN recommendations](https://alioth-intl.alicdn.com/skills-info/models/references/qwencloud-model-recommendations.md)
   first; if CDN access fails, use the
   [local fallback](cdn/references/qwencloud-model-recommendations.md).

Do not fabricate model names — only recommend models listed in the CDN catalogs or returned by CLI.
This skill is part of **qwencloud/qwencloud-ai**.

> **🚫 CRITICAL — Never override a user-specified model.** If the user (or the requesting execution skill) has already explicitly specified a model, this skill's job is done for that request: use the model **as given**. Do NOT recommend a "better suited" or newer model in its place, and do NOT add parameters (thinking mode, style hints) the user did not ask for. Recommendations and diagnostic flows below apply **only when no model has been specified**. You may verify availability and, if the model is unavailable/restricted, inform the user and suggest alternatives — but the user makes the final call.

## Skill directory

Load on demand. Fetch the documented CDN model catalogs when model lists, defaults, or recommendations
are needed. Do not fetch other external URLs unless the user explicitly asks for the latest data.

Every path under `cdn/` is a local fallback, not the primary source. For `cdn/<path>`, first fetch
