# quieter

A coding-agent skill that cuts saturation, contrast and visual noise in a UI while keeping hierarchy and character. Useful when the structure is fine but the design shouts.

## What it does

The skill starts with the `/quieter` slash command and runs in stages. First it works out what makes the design feel intense: colour saturation, contrast extremes, visual weight, too much motion, complexity, scale. Then it plans the reduction and edits across colour, weight, simplification, motion and composition.

Under the hood it is a set of instructions plus references from the `frontend-design` package: a hierarchy checklist, a spacing system, personality levers, an AI-slop detector, surface separation. Before doing anything it loads `$frontend-design` and follows its context gathering protocol, and if no design context exists yet it loads `$setup` first. So it is not standalone — without that base skill it will not run.

Know the boundary: this is not for structural clutter, too many features, or a design that lacks personality. It quiets, it does not rebuild. Saturation guidance suggests dropping to 70-85%, font weights from 900 to 600 and 700 to 500, motion distances from 40px to 10-20px. The instructions explicitly forbid making everything one size, stripping all colour, or killing the character.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill quieter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/quieter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/quieter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill quieter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/quieter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill quieter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/quieter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui quieter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/quieter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill quieter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/quieter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/quieter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill quieter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/quieter/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tone down an over-saturated colour palette
- strip decorative shadows, gradients and glows
- even out the visual weight of competing blocks
- soften harsh scale and contrast jumps
- replace excess borders with spacing and background shifts

## Example prompts
- /quieter this dashboard is too loud, calm it down
- /quieter make the landing page quieter without making it dull
- /quieter cut the visual noise in these product cards

name: quieter
description: Reduce visual intensity, saturation, and noise while preserving hierarchy and character. Use when the structure is basically sound but the design feels too loud, bold, garish, aggressive, or overstimulating—not when the real problem is structural clutter, too many features, or not enough personality.

Reduce visual intensity in designs that are too bold, aggressive, or overstimulating, creating a more refined and approachable aesthetic without losing effectiveness.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/quieter`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

Consult the [hierarchy checklist](../frontend-design/reference/hierarchy-checklist.md) when quieting the design depends on de-emphasis, grayscale hierarchy, or clearer action priority.
Consult the [spacing system](../frontend-design/reference/spacing-system.md) when calmness should come from better grouping and rhythm rather than just less saturation.
Consult the [personality levers](../frontend-design/reference/personality-levers.md) when the design needs to stay distinctive while becoming more restrained.
Consult the [ai slop detection](../frontend-design/reference/ai-slop-detection.md) when "quieter" risks drifting into generic, trend-safe blandness.
Consult the [surface separation](../frontend-design/reference/surface-separation.md) when removing intensity means using fewer borders, fewer unnecessary cards, quieter shadows, or calmer background shifts.

## Assess Current State

Analyze what makes the design feel too intense:

1. **Identify intensity sources**:
   - **Color saturation**: Overly bright or saturated colors
   - **Contrast extremes**: Too much high-contrast juxtaposition
   - **Visual weight**: Too many bold, heavy elements competing
   - **Animation excess**: Too much motion or overly dramatic effects
   - **Complexity**: Too many visual elements, patterns, or decorations
   - **Scale**: Everything is large and loud with no hierarchy

2. **Understand the context**:
   - What's the purpose? (Marketing vs tool vs reading experience)
   - Who's the audience? (Some contexts need energy)
   - What's working? (Don't throw away good ideas)
   - What's the core message? (Preserve what matters)

If any of these are unclear from the codebase, ask the user directly to clarify what you cannot infer.

**CRITICAL**: "Quieter" doesn't mean boring or generic. It means refined, sophisticated, and easier on the eyes. Think luxury, not laziness.
