## What it does

The skill governs how an agent wraps up its turn using `rig queue`. Instead of leaving pending context inside the chat thread where context compaction can erase it, the agent persists progress as an explicit queue item. The hot-potato rule demands that active work always finishes with a concrete pass. Drafting a prompt is not a handoff. Leaving text unsent in the input buffer stalls the entire rig.

State transitions strictly validate closure rationale. Reasons such as `handed_off_to` and `escalation` demand an explicit target via `closure_target`. The OpenRig daemon rejects marking a task as done while simultaneously flagging it as blocked on another task. When an agent gets blocked on a dependent step, it runs `rig queue block <id> --on <child>` to let the record automatically revert to pending once that dependency completes.

In CLI release 0.3.1, handoff commands wake the receiver by default. The `--no-nudge` flag suppresses this ping. Keep it only for cold parking or deliberate human gates. The `--notify` flag does not exist in 0.3.1; using it causes a syntax error. After passing the baton, the agent must pull its next queued item before idling.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill queue-handoff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/queue-handoff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/queue-handoff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill queue-handoff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/queue-handoff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill queue-handoff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/queue-handoff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvschwarz/openrig queue-handoff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/queue-handoff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill queue-handoff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvschwarz/openrig --path packages/daemon/assets/plugins/openrig-core/skills/queue-handoff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/queue-handoff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvschwarz/openrig --skill queue-handoff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- hand off an incomplete slice to another agent through `rig queue handoff`
- block an active queue item until a child task finishes via `rig queue block`
- escalate a blocker to a human operator as a persistent queue item
- audit and retire stale dispatches when a phase transition supersedes them
- pull the next assigned task from the local queue before going idle

## Example prompts
- Hand off this slice to the backend agent with `rig queue handoff` and set the summary
- Block task #12 on child task #15 using `rig queue block`
- Escalate this approval to the operator with `--no-nudge` for manual review

# Queue Handoff

Durable work handoff via queue items. Lets the system keep moving
through compactions, missed messages, and interruptions by passing the
ball forward instead of leaving work suspended in chat or in-flight
without an owner.

## Use this when

- **Ending a turn on substantive work.** Active work should end by
  passing the ball to an owner or to the human — never by going idle
  with the rig appearing dormant.
- **Finishing a slice that has a clear next step.** Default-nudge:
  receiver gets a wake-ping plus the durable queue item.
- **Blocked on another agent's work.** Use `rig queue block <id> --on <child>`
  (or `rig queue update <id> --state blocked --blocked-on <child>`). The item
  stays active and returns to pending when its blocker completes.
- **Escalating to the human.** Make the escalation a durable attention
  item, not just a chat message.

## Don't use this when

- The work is genuinely complete and there's no follow-on owner. Use
  `closure_reason: no-follow-on` (terminal completion) or
  `canceled`/`denied` as appropriate.
- The handoff would be too small and turn work into bureaucracy. Bundle
  the work into a coherent slice instead of decomposing every step.
- The handoff would be too broad and lose ownership/proof/closure
  criteria. Shape the qitem so the receiver knows the expected next
  action and closure evidence.

## The hot-potato terminal-turn-rule

Active work ends by passing the ball to a named next owner or to the
human. The qitem state machine enforces this:

`pending → in-progress → done` requires `closure_reason` from one of:
