## What it does

Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio exports catalog metadata daily into an AWS-managed Apache Iceberg table in S3 Tables. The exported table is read-only. This skill crafts SQL queries against those daily snapshots without forcing you to maintain custom ETL jobs. It spots unassigned tables and monitors catalog growth.

Every query requires an explicit filter on `snapshot_time`. Without this partition filter, the query scans every historical export and outputs duplicate records. For current inventory, set the filter to the current date. Joining snapshots from separate dates enables time-travel analytics to track newly documented assets.

Queries require AWS CLI credentials, a federated catalog registered in Glue, and Lake Formation `SELECT` plus `DESCRIBE` permissions. KMS encryption cannot be changed once the export configuration is created in DataZone. Specify your KMS key during initial setup to protect sensitive metadata.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/system-table-skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/system-table-skills/querying-aws-sagemaker-catalog/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find catalog assets lacking business descriptions
- audit data ownership across resources using SQL
- compare two catalog snapshots via time-travel queries
- track asset inventory growth across recent snapshots
- verify DataZone export configuration status for S3 Tables

## Example prompts
- Show all SageMaker Catalog assets where business_description is null
- Compare catalog snapshots between last week and today to find newly documented tables
- Run a SQL query on asset_metadata.asset grouped by owningEntityId

# Query AWS SageMaker Catalog System Tables

## Overview

**Works best with** the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-mcp/) for sandboxed execution and audit logging. All commands below use the AWS CLI and work in any environment with configured AWS credentials.

Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio (whose catalog feature is referred to below as SageMaker Catalog) exports asset metadata as a daily-snapshot
Apache Iceberg table in the AWS-managed `aws-sagemaker-catalog` table bucket. This
enables SQL queries over your entire data catalog inventory — asset counts, governance
gaps, ownership audits, and historical comparisons — without building custom ETL.

Data is partitioned by `snapshot_time` and exported once daily (around midnight per
region). The table is read-only.

## Decision Tree

| User intent | Use this skill? | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| SQL analytics on catalog state (counts, governance, trends) | **Yes** | — |
| Historical comparison ("what changed in catalog last week") | **Yes** — time travel via `snapshot_time` | — |
| Find assets without owners or descriptions | **Yes** | — |
| Find a specific table by name or concept | **No** | `finding-data-lake-assets` or Glue Discovery `search` |
| Browse/enumerate catalog interactively | **No** | `exploring-data-catalog` |
| Run a query *on* a table's data | **No** | `querying-data-lake` |
| Manage catalog metadata (add descriptions, tags) | **No** | Glue Discovery `put-form-type` / `associate-glossary-terms` |

## Common Tasks

### 1. Check If Configured

```bash
aws datazone get-data-export-configuration \
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 912d7452a07dbd45

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 912d7452a07dbd45 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
