Turns on Redshift system-table publishing to S3 Tables as Iceberg and helps you query the published logs from Athena or Redshift.

## What it does

The skill walks through three steps: enable `SYS_*` log publishing to S3 Tables, check the status and locate the namespace, then query the published tables. It covers both Provisioned clusters and Serverless namespaces. Under the hood are AWS CLI commands for `redshift enable-logging`, `redshift describe-logging-status` and `redshift-serverless get-namespace`, plus guidance on reading the responses — Provisioned returns PascalCase fields, Serverless returns camelCase, and that trips people up.

Why move logs out of the cluster at all? The live `SYS_` views have a limited retention window, while S3 Tables keeps history well beyond it. Queries against S3 Tables also add no load to the running cluster. The published tables are read-only, live in the AWS-managed `aws-redshift` table bucket, and can be read by any Iceberg-compatible engine and joined with other lake data.

You need configured AWS credentials. The author recommends IAM roles or temporary credentials over long-lived access keys. It works best with the AWS MCP server, which adds sandboxed execution and audit logging. If you need the current real-time `SYS_` state on a live cluster, this is the wrong tool — the skill is about non-realtime data. Audit logs delivered to S3 or CloudWatch (`useractivitylog`, `userlog`, `connectionlog`) are out of scope; they use the separate `--log-exports` mechanism.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-redshift -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/querying-aws-redshift/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/querying-aws-redshift/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-redshift -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/querying-aws-redshift/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-redshift -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/querying-aws-redshift/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws querying-aws-redshift
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/querying-aws-redshift/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-redshift -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/system-table-skills/querying-aws-redshift
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/querying-aws-redshift/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-redshift -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- enable system-table publishing to S3 Tables for a cluster
- confirm a cluster is publishing and find its S3 Tables namespace
- query `sys_query_history` beyond the in-cluster retention window
- build a Redshift monitoring and auditing dashboard on Iceberg data
- read published tables from Athena or Redshift without loading the cluster

## Example prompts
- enable S3 Tables publishing for Redshift system tables on my cluster
- check the logging status and show me the S3 Tables namespace
- query `sys_query_history` from the published tables in Athena

# Query AWS Redshift System Tables

## Overview

**Works best with** the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-mcp/) for sandboxed execution and audit logging. All commands below use the AWS CLI and work in any environment with configured AWS credentials. Use IAM roles or temporary credentials; avoid long-lived access keys.

Redshift can publish **system tables** — the `SYS_*` monitoring data such as `sys_query_history`, `sys_query_detail`, and `sys_connection_log` — to **S3 Tables** as continuously-updated Apache Iceberg tables.
