## What it does

This skill runs SQL queries on CloudWatch logs exported to Amazon S3 Tables in Apache Iceberg format. Log files land in the AWS-managed `aws-cloudwatch` table bucket and can be queried directly through Amazon Athena. The setup covers over 43 AWS sources. That count includes VPC Flow Logs. Storage comes at no additional charge beyond standard CloudWatch ingestion.

Commands rely on the AWS CLI. It works best alongside the AWS MCP server for sandboxed runs. Setting up tables uses `aws observabilityadmin create-s3-table-integration` and `aws logs associate-source-to-s3-table-integration`. For queries, you need the federated Glue catalog `s3tablescatalog` alongside Lake Formation permissions.

The integration does not backfill older logs. Tables capture events only after association. For quick regex matching or real-time log streaming, CloudWatch Logs Insights remains the better choice.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-cloudwatch -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-cloudwatch -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-cloudwatch -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws querying-aws-cloudwatch
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-cloudwatch -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/system-table-skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/querying-aws-cloudwatch/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill querying-aws-cloudwatch -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- run SQL queries on VPC Flow Logs and WAF logs in Amazon Athena
- join CloudWatch log tables with S3 metadata in a single query
- configure S3 Tables integrations using `aws observabilityadmin`
- inspect the `aws-cloudwatch` bucket and verify associated namespaces

## Example prompts
- Check if the CloudWatch S3 Tables integration is enabled in us-east-1
- Run an Athena SQL query on amazon_vpc__flow to find rejected traffic
- Associate the WAF log data source with the S3 Tables integration

# Query AWS CloudWatch System Tables

## Overview

**Works best with** the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-mcp/) for sandboxed execution and audit logging. All commands below use the AWS CLI and work in any environment with configured AWS credentials.

The CloudWatch Logs S3 Tables integration exports log data as Apache Iceberg tables in the AWS-managed `aws-cloudwatch` table bucket. This enables SQL analysis via Amazon Athena and correlation of log data with non-CloudWatch data (S3 metadata, business tables, etc.). Available at no additional storage charge beyond CloudWatch ingestion pricing.

## Decision Tree

| User intent | Use this skill? | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Run SQL across large volumes of log data | **Yes** | — |
| Correlate logs with S3 metadata or other tables | **Yes** — join across catalogs | — |
| Quick log search / pattern matching | **No** | CloudWatch Logs Insights (faster for ad-hoc) |
| Real-time log streaming/tailing | **No** | CloudWatch Logs console or `logs filter-log-events` |
| Set up alarms on log patterns | **No** | CloudWatch Metric Filters / Alarms |
| Query historical logs before integration was enabled | **No** | CloudWatch Logs (no backfill in S3 Tables) |
