## What it does

The skill covers three areas: the native build itself, the usual runtime failures, and container packaging. It starts by checking the project's Quarkus version, since both the build keys and the Mandrel version depend on it. With Maven that is `./mvnw package -Dnative`; with Gradle on Quarkus 3.10 or newer, `./gradlew build -Dquarkus.native.enabled=true -Dquarkus.package.jar.enabled=false`. The `quarkus.package.type` key was deprecated in 3.10 and is still accepted in 3.40 with a warning.

A table maps symptoms to fixes: `ClassNotFoundException` at runtime, missing resource files, `OutOfMemoryError` during the build, classes initialized at build time. The remedies are `@RegisterForReflection`, a `reflection-config.json` in `src/main/resources`, or `--initialize-at-run-time` passed through `quarkus.native.additional-build-args`. The skill's advice is to reach for a Quarkus extension before a plain library, because extensions register reflection for you.

One catch is worth knowing up front. A container build on macOS or Windows produces a Linux ELF that will not run on the host, so run it inside a Linux container. That is also when `./mvnw verify -Dnative` fails in the `*IT` with exit code 126. Native builds take minutes and several GB of memory, so keep them in CI rather than in every test run.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker, Kubernetes

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install github/awesome-copilot quarkus-native-and-container
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md`

### Claude Code

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add github/awesome-copilot --skill quarkus-native-and-container -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot --path skills/quarkus-native-and-container
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/skills/quarkus-native-and-container/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a Quarkus native executable without a local GraalVM
- fix `ClassNotFoundException` when serializing DTOs in the native binary
- include template files in the native build
- run integration tests against the native runner
- produce a container image and Kubernetes manifests

## Example prompts
- Build the native binary with a container build and show me where it lands
- The native runner throws `ClassNotFoundException` on my DTO — register the class for reflection
- Add a `@QuarkusIntegrationTest` and run `./mvnw verify -Dnative`

# Quarkus Native and Container

Check the project's Quarkus version first. For generic (non-Quarkus) GraalVM work, use the optional `java-add-graalvm-native-image-support` skill if installed (otherwise see the GraalVM docs, <https://www.graalvm.org/latest/reference-manual/native-image/>).

## Native build

```bash
# container build: no local GraalVM needed (Docker/Podman required)
./mvnw package -Dnative -Dquarkus.native.container-build=true
# local Mandrel/GraalVM (JAVA_HOME / GRAALVM_HOME must point to it)
./mvnw package -Dnative
# Gradle, Quarkus 3.10+ (add -Dquarkus.native.container-build=true without a local Mandrel)
./gradlew build -Dquarkus.native.enabled=true -Dquarkus.package.jar.enabled=false
# Gradle, older Quarkus
./gradlew build -Dquarkus.package.type=native
```

`quarkus.package.type` was deprecated in 3.10 (the 3.10 migration guide replaces it with `quarkus.native.enabled` and `quarkus.package.jar.*`); it is still accepted in 3.40 with a warning. Version gate verified with Gradle: on 3.9.5 `-Dquarkus.native.enabled=true -Dquarkus.package.jar.enabled=false` is ignored ("Unrecognized configuration key" warnings) and only a JVM `quarkus-app` is built, while `-Dquarkus.package.type=native` produces the native runner; on 3.10.0, 3.27.6 and 3.40.1 the new keys produce the native runner (3.10.0 also accepts the old key with the deprecation warning). The Maven `native` profile in the generated `pom.xml` already sets `quarkus.native.enabled=true`, `quarkus.package.jar.enabled=false` and `skipITs=false` when `-Dnative` is passed.
