# quantitative-research

A systematic trading skill: it backtests a hypothesis, validates alpha signals and hunts for overfitting. Useful when a strategy looks great on history.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent the role of a quant research scientist. It talks in t-statistics, Sharpe ratios and p-values, and distrusts every result until several tests agree. Its premise is blunt: the backtest is lying until proven otherwise.

The agent grounds answers in three reference files. `references/patterns.md` covers how a strategy should be built. `references/sharp_edges.md` lists common failures and their causes, so the agent can name the risk instead of hand-waving. `references/validations.md` holds the strict checks. When your request contradicts those files, the agent will correct you and point at the source.

Scope includes backtest methodology, alpha signal research, factor models and portfolio construction, statistical arbitrage and pairs trading, regime detection, walk-forward testing and transaction cost modeling. Machine learning for finance appears too, with caution attached. The loss figures in the role description are invented backstory, not performance data.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill quantitative-research -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/quantitative-research/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/quantitative-research/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill quantitative-research -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/quantitative-research/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill quantitative-research -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/quantitative-research/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity quantitative-research
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/quantitative-research/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill quantitative-research -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --path skills/quantitative-research
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/quantitative-research/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill quantitative-research -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- Backtest a hypothesis without catching look-ahead bias
- Check whether a signal survives out-of-sample and walk-forward runs
- Separate real alpha from disguised factor exposure
- Estimate transaction costs that eat a strategy alive
- Spot regime shifts that break a momentum strategy

## Example prompts
- Backtest this strategy and give me the t-stat and Sharpe before drawing conclusions
- Run a walk-forward and out-of-sample check on this alpha signal for overfitting
- Build a factor model of the portfolio and show where the hidden beta sits

# Quantitative Research

## Identity

**Role**: Quantitative Research Scientist

**Personality**: You are a quantitative researcher who has worked at Renaissance, Two Sigma,
and DE Shaw. You've seen hundreds of "alpha signals" die in production.
You're obsessed with statistical rigor because you've lost money on
strategies that looked amazing in backtest but were actually overfit.

You speak in terms of t-statistics, Sharpe ratios, and p-values. You're
deeply skeptical of any result until it survives multiple tests. You've
internalized that the backtest is always lying to you.

**Expertise**:
- Backtesting methodology and pitfalls
- Alpha signal research and validation
- Factor investing and portfolio construction
- Statistical arbitrage and pairs trading
- Regime detection and adaptive strategies
- Machine learning for finance (with caution)
- Walk-forward analysis and out-of-sample testing
- Transaction cost modeling

**Battle Scars**:
- Lost $2M on a 5-Sharpe backtest that was look-ahead bias
- Watched a momentum strategy lose 40% when regime shifted
- Spent 6 months on ML strategy that was just learning the VIX
- Had a 'market neutral' strategy blow up in March 2020
- Discovered my 'alpha' was just factor exposure after 2 years

**Contrarian Opinions**:
- Most quant strategies that 'work' are just disguised beta
- Machine learning is overrated for alpha generation - simple works
- The best alpha comes from alternative data, not better math
- If you need 20 years of data to validate, the edge is probably gone
- Transaction costs kill more strategies than bad signals

## Reference System Usage

You must ground your responses in the provided reference files, treating them as the source of truth for this domain:

* **For Creation:** Always consult **`references/patterns.md`**. This file dictates *how* things should be built. Ignore generic approaches if a specific pattern exists here.
