Recommends Qwen models and generation parameters based on task needs. It detects API key billing types and checks current model pricing.

## What it does

The skill detects your API key type with a Python command that inspects `DASHSCOPE_API_KEY` or `QIANWEN_API_KEY`. Keys starting with `sk-sp-` map to the Token Plan catalog, while other keys use the standard Pay-as-you-go catalog. If no key is set, the skill prompts for your billing preference rather than blocking execution.

Two operating modes handle different workflows. Interactive advisory mode asks targeted questions about your task before suggesting a model. Cross-skill resolution provides a direct lookup path for execution skills that need a model decision without user prompts. The skill fetches reference data from Alioth CDN snapshots and falls back to local files in `cdn/` during network issues.

Real-time quota tracking and live pricing require Node.js 18 or higher along with `@qianwenai/qianwen-cli`. Without the CLI, you are limited to static snapshot data and cannot inspect account balances. In Claude Code, ensure the agent reads `SKILL.md` before the first run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --skill qianwen-model-selector -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/qianwen-model-selector/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/qianwen-model-selector/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --skill qianwen-model-selector -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/qianwen-model-selector/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --skill qianwen-model-selector -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/qianwen-model-selector/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai qianwen-model-selector
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/qianwen-model-selector/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --skill qianwen-model-selector -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --path skills/models/qianwen-model-selector
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/qianwen-model-selector/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add QianWen-AI/qianwen-ai --skill qianwen-model-selector -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- select the right Qwen model for specific project requirements
- identify whether an API key uses Token Plan or Pay-as-you-go billing
- look up model pricing and token catalogs without hardcoded names
- resolve model choices automatically for secondary execution skills

## Example prompts
- Use qianwen-model-selector to find the best model for code refactoring
- Which Qwen model is cheapest for batch text processing?
- Check Qwen model availability and quotas using the CLI

# Qwen Model Selector (Advisor)

## Detecting Key Type

Run this command to detect the API key type (outputs `token-plan`, `payg`, or `not-set`):

```bash
python3 -c "
import os
from pathlib import Path
env_file = Path('.env')
if not env_file.exists():
    for parent in [Path.cwd()] + list(Path.cwd().parents):
        if (parent / '.git').exists() or (parent / 'skills').is_dir():
            env_file = parent / '.env'
            break
if env_file.exists():
    for line in env_file.read_text().splitlines():
        line = line.strip()
        if not line or line.startswith('#') or '=' not in line:
            continue
        k, v = line.split('=', 1)
        k, v = k.strip(), v.strip().strip('\"').strip(\"'\")
        if k in ('QIANWEN_API_KEY', 'DASHSCOPE_API_KEY') and k not in os.environ:
            os.environ[k] = v
key = os.environ.get('QIANWEN_API_KEY') or os.environ.get('DASHSCOPE_API_KEY') or ''
print('token-plan' if key.startswith('sk-sp-') else 'payg' if key else 'not-set')
"
```

| Output | Billing mode | Action |
|--------|-------------|--------|
| `token-plan` | Token Plan (Credits) | Fetch the current [Token Plan model catalog](https://alioth.alicdn.com/skills-info/models/references/qianwen-token-plan-models.md) and select only from it. Default to Team superset when edition unknown. If CDN access fails, use the [local fallback](cdn/references/qianwen-token-plan-models.md). |
| `payg` | Pay-as-you-go | Full model catalog available; continue below. |
| `not-set` | No key configured | **Do not block.** Ask the user: "Which approach do you plan to use? (1) Standard PAYG key (2) Token Plan key (3) Skip for now — just browse recommendations." Proceed based on their choice. |

> **Windows**: If `python3` is not available, use `python`. The multi-line `-c` string works in both
