## What it does

qdrant-vector-search gives an agent practical guidance for Qdrant: creating collections, inserting points with vectors and payloads, running nearest-neighbor searches, and filtering results by fields. It covers dense and sparse vectors, multiple vectors per record, COSINE, EUCLID, DOT, and MANHATTAN distance metrics, plus batch search.

The material also covers HNSW, quantization, sharding, replication, and REST and gRPC APIs. Python examples require `qdrant-client>=1.12.0`. For local development, Qdrant can run in Docker on ports `6333` and `6334`, with persistent storage when needed. The Python examples depend on that client package.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant-vector-search -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/qdrant/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/qdrant/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/qdrant/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/qdrant/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs qdrant
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/qdrant/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 15-rag/qdrant
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/qdrant/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill qdrant -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- create a collection for vector search
- load vectors with metadata payloads
- filter search results by payload fields
- build nearest-neighbor retrieval for RAG
- run Qdrant locally with Docker

## Example prompts
- Use the `qdrant-vector-search` skill to add Qdrant document retrieval with a `category` metadata filter.
- Apply `qdrant-vector-search` to create a `documents` collection, configure HNSW, and batch-upload points.
- Use `qdrant-vector-search` to connect the Python client to Qdrant at `localhost:6333` and run a vector search.

# Qdrant - Vector Similarity Search Engine

High-performance vector database written in Rust for production RAG and semantic search.

## When to use Qdrant

**Use Qdrant when:**
- Building production RAG systems requiring low latency
- Need hybrid search (vectors + metadata filtering)
- Require horizontal scaling with sharding/replication
- Want on-premise deployment with full data control
- Need multi-vector storage per record (dense + sparse)
- Building real-time recommendation systems

**Key features:**
- **Rust-powered**: Memory-safe, high performance
- **Rich filtering**: Filter by any payload field during search
- **Multiple vectors**: Dense, sparse, multi-dense per point
- **Quantization**: Scalar, product, binary for memory efficiency
- **Distributed**: Raft consensus, sharding, replication
- **REST + gRPC**: Both APIs with full feature parity

**Use alternatives instead:**
- **Chroma**: Simpler setup, embedded use cases
- **FAISS**: Maximum raw speed, research/batch processing
- **Pinecone**: Fully managed, zero ops preferred
- **Weaviate**: GraphQL preference, built-in vectorizers

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
# Python client
pip install qdrant-client
# Docker (recommended for development)
docker run -p 6333:6333 -p 6334:6334 qdrant/qdrant
# Docker with persistent storage
docker run -p 6333:6333 -p 6334:6334 \
    -v $(pwd)/qdrant_storage:/qdrant/storage \
    qdrant/qdrant
```

### Basic usage

```python
from qdrant_client import QdrantClient
from qdrant_client.models import Distance, VectorParams, PointStruct
# Connect to Qdrant
client = QdrantClient(host="localhost", port=6333)
# Create collection
client.create_collection(
    collection_name="documents",
    vectors_config=VectorParams(size=384, distance=Distance.COSINE)
)
# Insert vectors with payload
client.upsert(
    collection_name="documents",
    points=[
        PointStruct(
            id=1,
            vector=[0.1, 0.2, ...],  # 384-dim vector
            payload={"title": "Doc 1", "category": "tech"}
        ),
        PointStruct(
            id=2,
            vector=[0.3, 0.4, ...],
            payload={"title": "Doc 2", "category": "science"}
        )
    ]
)
# Search with filtering
results = client.search(
    collection_name="documents",
    query_vector=[0.15, 0.25, ...],
    query_filter={
