## What it does

The skill helps select a logging setup based on the application and its workload. For small services, it describes a dependency-free pattern: send human-readable messages to journald with `print()` and write telemetry to a separate JSONL file with size-based rotation. Other sections cover `loguru`, `structlog`, and Python’s standard `logging` module.

A worked example shows event writing, file rotation, and the split between operational logs and telemetry. There is also guidance on logging a token fingerprint instead of the secret itself. The lightweight pattern has a clear trade-off: it does not filter by severity or offer per-module control.

The skill also discusses `structlog` with OTel and logging for containers. For a service on one machine, journald plus JSONL is a starting point; teams that need severity filters will need another approach.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add terrylica/cc-skills --skill python-logging-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/python-logging-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/python-logging-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add terrylica/cc-skills --skill python-logging-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/python-logging-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add terrylica/cc-skills --skill python-logging-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/python-logging-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install terrylica/cc-skills python-logging-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/python-logging-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add terrylica/cc-skills --skill python-logging-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/terrylica/cc-skills --path plugins/devops-tools/skills/python-logging-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/python-logging-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add terrylica/cc-skills --skill python-logging-best-practices -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- choose a logging library for a Python service
- write JSONL telemetry for later analysis
- rotate log files based on their size
- separate operator messages from machine-readable events
- keep full secret tokens out of logs

## Example prompts
- Set up journald and JSONL logging for this small Python service.
- Add structured telemetry events with size-based file rotation to this script.
- Compare `loguru` and `structlog` for my service and recommend a logging setup.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:

- Setting up Python logging for any service or script
- Configuring structured JSONL logging for analysis
- Implementing log rotation
- Choosing between lightweight (zero-dep) and full-featured logging
- Adding logging to containerized, systemd, or local applications

## Overview

Unified reference for Python logging patterns optimized for machine readability (Claude Code analysis) and operational reliability. **Starts with the lightest viable approach and scales up only when needed.**

## Decision Heuristic: Start Light, Scale Up

```
Is it < 5 services on a single machine, < 1 event/sec?
  YES → Lightweight Pattern (print + JSONL telemetry)
  NO  → Is it containerized / serverless?
    YES → stdout JSON (any library), no file rotation
    NO  → Is OTel tracing required?
      YES → structlog + OTel
      NO  → loguru (CLI tools) or stdlib RotatingFileHandler
```

| Approach        | Use Case                                             | Pros                                          | Cons                                         |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| **Lightweight** | Small systemd services, self-hosted, single operator | Zero deps, journald integration, minimal code | No severity filtering, no per-module control |
| `loguru`        | CLI tools, scripts, local services                   | Zero-config, built-in rotation, great DX      | External dep, not truly schema-enforced      |
| `structlog`     | Production services, OTel integration                | ContextVars, processor chains, OTel-native    | Steeper learning curve                       |
| `stdlib`        | LaunchAgent daemons, zero-dep constraint             | No dependencies, Python 3.14 `merge_extra`    | More boilerplate, no structured defaults     |
| `Logfire` | AI/LLM observability, Pydantic apps | Built on OTel, token/cost tracking, SQL | SaaS dependency, newer ecosystem |
