## What it does

The skill splits Tailwind CSS v4 work into 42 rules across 8 categories, ordered by impact. The first two are critical: build configuration and CSS generation. Then come bundle optimization, utility patterns, component architecture, theming, responsive design and animation. Each rule carries a prefix (`build-`, `gen-`, `bundle-`, `util-`, `comp-`, `theme-`, `resp-`, `anim-`) and lives in `references/<rule-id>.md`, with the reasoning plus incorrect and correct code samples.

Before you start, the skill asks you to run two commands in the project root. The first compares installed and targeted versions, the second finds deprecated APIs and prints rule IDs: `npx -y @pymodel/react-frontend-skills detect` and `npx -y @pymodel/react-frontend-skills scan --skill tailwind`. You then open the matching files under `references/` by those IDs.

The rules cover the v4 CSS-first approach, the `@theme` directive, container queries, OKLCH colors and logical properties for RTL. The upgrade tool needs Node.js 20+. If your project still runs Sass or Less, the preprocessor rules won't apply — v4 advises dropping them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PyModel/react-frontend-skills --skill tailwind -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwind/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PyModel/react-frontend-skills --skill tailwind -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PyModel/react-frontend-skills --skill tailwind -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PyModel/react-frontend-skills tailwind
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PyModel/react-frontend-skills --skill tailwind -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PyModel/react-frontend-skills --path skills/tailwind
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PyModel/react-frontend-skills --skill tailwind -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PyModel/react-frontend-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tailwind/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- migrate a project from the old Tailwind config to the v4 CSS-first approach
- surface deprecated utilities and APIs after an upgrade
- switch the build from PostCSS to the Vite plugin
- shrink the production CSS bundle
- define a theme through the @theme directive and semantic tokens

## Example prompts
- Run scan --skill tailwind and list which rules my styles break
- Rewrite this component following gen-css-first-config and theme-semantic-tokens
- Check my Tailwind build config against the build- rules

# Tailwind Labs Tailwind CSS v4 Best Practices

Comprehensive performance optimization guide for Tailwind CSS v4 applications, maintained by Tailwind Labs. Contains 42 rules across 8 categories, prioritized by impact to guide automated refactoring and code generation.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Configuring Tailwind CSS v4 build tooling (Vite plugin, PostCSS, CLI)
- Writing or migrating styles using v4's CSS-first approach
- Optimizing CSS bundle size and build performance
- Implementing responsive designs with breakpoints or container queries
- Setting up theming with @theme directive and design tokens

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Build Configuration | CRITICAL | `build-` |
| 2 | CSS Generation | CRITICAL | `gen-` |
| 3 | Bundle Optimization | HIGH | `bundle-` |
| 4 | Utility Patterns | HIGH | `util-` |
| 5 | Component Architecture | MEDIUM-HIGH | `comp-` |
| 6 | Theming & Design Tokens | MEDIUM | `theme-` |
| 7 | Responsive & Adaptive | MEDIUM | `resp-` |
| 8 | Animation & Transitions | LOW-MEDIUM | `anim-` |
