## What it does

This skill provides code patterns and architectural rules for the Pydantic AI framework. It teaches your assistant how to instantiate `Agent` classes, enforce structured outputs with Pydantic schemas, and register function tools using `@agent.tool` or `@agent.tool_plain`.

It includes practical recipes for state injection via `RunContext`, lifecycle interception with `Hooks`, and pre-packaged capabilities like `Thinking` or `WebSearch`. You can also configure agents directly from YAML specs using `Agent.from_file` and isolate logic in pytest suites with `TestModel`.

The generated code requires Python 3.10+. It will not help with standalone Pydantic schema validation or other frameworks such as LangChain or CrewAI.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill building-pydantic-ai-agents -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill building-pydantic-ai-agents -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill building-pydantic-ai-agents -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cline/skills building-pydantic-ai-agents
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill building-pydantic-ai-agents -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cline/skills --path skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill building-pydantic-ai-agents -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cline/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/building-pydantic-ai-agents/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- produce structured outputs using Pydantic models
- inject runtime context into agent tools via `RunContext`
- write unit tests for agents using `TestModel` and pytest
- load agent definitions and capabilities from YAML files

## Example prompts
- Build a Pydantic AI agent with web search capabilities and a Pydantic model for output.
- Write a pytest test case for this agent using TestModel without hitting external APIs.
- Show how to pass dependencies into a tool using RunContext.

# Building AI Agents with Pydantic AI

Pydantic AI is a Python agent framework for building production-grade Generative AI applications.
This skill provides patterns, architecture guidance, and tested code examples for building applications with Pydantic AI.

## When to Use This Skill

Invoke this skill when:
- User asks to build an AI agent, create an LLM-powered app, or mentions Pydantic AI
- User wants to add tools, capabilities (thinking, web search), or structured output to an agent
- User asks to define agents from YAML/JSON specs or use template strings
- User wants to stream agent events, delegate between agents, or test agent behavior
- Code imports `pydantic_ai` or references Pydantic AI classes (`Agent`, `RunContext`, `Tool`)
- User asks about hooks, lifecycle interception, or agent observability with Logfire
- The agent design includes optional instructions, specialist workflows, long-tail tools, or any context the model does not need on most turns

Do **not** use this skill for:
- The Pydantic validation library alone (`pydantic`/`BaseModel` without agents)
- Other AI frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, AutoGen)
- General Python development unrelated to AI agents

## Quick-Start Patterns

### Create a Basic Agent

```python
from pydantic_ai import Agent
agent = Agent(
    'anthropic:claude-sonnet-4-6',
    instructions='Be concise, reply with one sentence.',
)
result = agent.run_sync('Where does "hello world" come from?')
print(result.output)
"""
The first known use of "hello, world" was in a 1974 textbook about the C programming language.
"""
```

### Add Tools to an Agent

```python
import random
from pydantic_ai import Agent, RunContext
agent = Agent(
    'google:gemini-3-flash-preview',
    deps_type=str,
    instructions=(
        "You're a dice game, you should roll the die and see if the number "
        "you get back matches the user's guess. If so, tell them they're a winner. "
        "Use the player's name in the response."
    ),
)
@agent.tool_plain
def roll_dice() -> str:
    """Roll a six-sided die and return the result."""
    return str(random.randint(1, 6))
@agent.tool
def get_player_name(ctx: RunContext[str]) -> str:
    """Get the player's name."""
    return ctx.deps
dice_result = agent.run_sync('My guess is 4', deps='Anne')
print(dice_result.output)
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 09e349d011cc2fd2 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
