## What it does

The skill kicks in when a project needs PWA work: a manifest with icons and `standalone` display, Service Worker registration, handling `beforeinstallprompt` for your own install button, background sync and an offline fallback page. It walks through what actually makes an app installable — HTTPS, a manifest with the required fields, a Service Worker with a `fetch` handler, and 192×192 plus 512×512 icons.

Caching gets its own section. Cache-First for static assets, Network-First for API data, Stale-While-Revalidate when you want both speed and freshness. Each strategy comes with its tradeoff: cached static files stay stale until the cache is updated, and Network-First simply fails without a connection. Implementations live in `references/service-worker-patterns.md`, `references/install-prompt.md` and `references/offline-handling.md`.

The skill is not meant for native app development, general web performance or server-side rendering — the authors point elsewhere for those. And if your site is plain static, the PWA overhead may not pay off, so it is worth checking whether you need a Service Worker at all. It runs with `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Grep` and `Glob`, so it can inspect and edit your files directly.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill pwa-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pwa-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill pwa-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill pwa-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills pwa-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill pwa-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/pwa-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill pwa-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/pwa-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- make a web app installable on mobile and desktop
- set up a Service Worker without breaking updates
- pick a caching strategy for static assets vs API calls
- show a custom install button instead of the browser one
- serve an offline page when the network drops

## Example prompts
- Add a manifest.json and a Service Worker so the app can be installed on phones
- Set up caching: cache-first for static assets, network-first for the API
- Catch beforeinstallprompt and show a custom install button

# Progressive Web App Expert

Build installable, offline-capable web apps with Service Workers, smart caching, and native-like experiences.

## When to Use This Skill

- Making a web app installable on mobile/desktop
- Implementing offline functionality
- Setting up Service Worker caching strategies
- Handling install prompts (`beforeinstallprompt`)
- Background sync for offline-first apps
- Managing PWA update flows
- Creating web app manifests

## When NOT to Use This Skill

- **Native app development** → Use React Native, Flutter, or native SDKs
- **General web performance** → Use Lighthouse/performance auditing tools
- **Server-side rendering issues** → Use Next.js/framework-specific docs
- **Push notifications only** → Consider dedicated push notification services
- **Simple static sites** → PWA overhead may not be worth it

## Core Concepts

### What Makes a PWA Installable

1. **HTTPS** (or localhost for dev)
2. **Web App Manifest** with required fields
3. **Service Worker** with fetch handler
4. **Icons** (192×192 and 512×512 minimum)

### The PWA Stack

```
