# publish-substack-article

Turns a Markdown article into a Substack draft: converts the markup to HTML and pastes it into the editor. Nothing goes live on its own.

## What it does

The skill opens your publication dashboard, starts a new post and moves the file's content into it. Markdown is converted to HTML with Python's `markdown` library and the `tables` and `fenced_code` extensions, then the HTML goes to the system clipboard through `copy_to_clipboard.py` and lands in the editor on Cmd+V or Ctrl+V. Substack runs on Tiptap, so it reads pasted HTML as real formatting: headings, links, bold text and code blocks all keep their shape. Filling the editor directly or pasting raw Markdown does not work — Tiptap does not parse Markdown on paste.

Tables are a different story. Substack collapses an HTML table into plain text, so the skill detects tables in the file, renders each one to PNG with the `diagram-to-image` skill, notes where it belonged and strips the table markup from the content. The image is uploaded after the main text is in place. If your article has tables and `diagram-to-image` is missing, the preprocessing step fails — worth installing both skills together.

Four things have to be ready first: a browser MCP (Chrome DevTools or Playwright), a logged-in Substack session in that browser, Python 3 with the `markdown` package, and the `copy_to_clipboard.py` script. Of the two MCPs the skill prefers Playwright by default and falls back to Chrome DevTools only when Playwright tools are absent. It never guesses your publication subdomain: it takes it from the skill argument, from the `SUBSTACK_PUBLICATION` environment variable, or asks you.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright, Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --skill publish-substack-article -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/publish-substack-article/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/publish-substack-article/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --skill publish-substack-article -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/publish-substack-article/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --skill publish-substack-article -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/publish-substack-article/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills publish-substack-article
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/publish-substack-article/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --skill publish-substack-article -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --path skills/publish-substack-article
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/publish-substack-article/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sugarforever/01coder-agent-skills --skill publish-substack-article -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- move a Markdown article into the Substack editor without copying by hand
- keep headings, links and code blocks intact when pasting into Tiptap
- work around Substack's inability to render HTML tables
- leave the post as a draft and proofread it before it goes out
- publish repeatedly to one publication without retyping the subdomain

## Example prompts
- Publish `article.md` to Substack as a draft
- Push `post.md` to Substack, publication verysmallwoods
- Create a Substack draft from this Markdown file

```text
name: publish-substack-article
description: Publish Markdown articles to Substack as drafts. Use when user wants to publish a Markdown file to Substack, or mentions "发布到 Substack", "Substack article", "publish to Substack". Handles Markdown-to-HTML conversion and saves as draft (never auto-publish).
# Publish Substack Article
Publish Markdown content to Substack post editor, converting Markdown to HTML and pasting as rich text. Saves as draft for user review before publishing.
## Prerequisites
- Browser automation MCP (either one):
  - **Chrome DevTools MCP** (`mcp__chrome-devtools__*`)
  - **Playwright MCP** (`mcp__playwright__*`)
- User logged into Substack
- Python 3 with `markdown` package (`pip install markdown`)
- `copy_to_clipboard.py` script (shared from publish-zsxq-article skill)
## Browser MCP Tool Mapping
This skill works with both Chrome DevTools MCP and Playwright MCP:
| Action | Chrome DevTools MCP | Playwright MCP |
|--------|---------------------|----------------|
| Navigate | `navigate_page` | `browser_navigate` |
| Take snapshot | `take_snapshot` | `browser_snapshot` |
| Take screenshot | `take_screenshot` | `browser_take_screenshot` |
| Click element | `click` | `browser_click` |
| Fill text | `fill` | `browser_type` |
| Upload file | `upload_file` | `browser_file_upload` |
| Press key | `press_key` | `browser_press_key` |
| Evaluate JS | `evaluate_script` | `browser_evaluate` |
**Priority**: Default to **Playwright MCP**. Use Chrome DevTools MCP only when Playwright MCP is unavailable.
**Detection**: At runtime, prefer `mcp__playwright__browser_navigate`. Fall back to `mcp__chrome-devtools__navigate_page` only if Playwright tools are not available.
