## What it does

public-surface-audit inspects the file set returned by `git ls-files`. It looks for real usernames, absolute home paths, company asset names, companion-store names, and other operator-private tokens. Each hit includes its file, line, matched token, and severity. Ignored files such as `CLAUDE.local.md` stay outside the scan.

The skill combines patterns from `.claude/rules/.public-surface-patterns.defaults` with the gitignored `.claude/rules/.public-surface-patterns`, or uses the `PSA_PATTERNS` environment override. An allowlist suppresses a match only when both its file and token are listed. An empty override explicitly declares that no private tokens are configured; an absent pattern source produces `NOT CONFIGURED`.

The command must run inside a Git repository because its scope comes from `git ls-files`. Use `--target <repo path>` for another repository or add `--json` when a hook needs a machine-readable verdict.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill public-surface-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/public-surface-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill public-surface-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill public-surface-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrono-meta/forge-harness public-surface-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill public-surface-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness --path plugins/fh-meta/skills/public-surface-audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill public-surface-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness/tree/HEAD/plugins/fh-meta/skills/public-surface-audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scan tracked files for private tokens
- catch absolute home paths before publishing
- separate ignored files from the public surface
- report each match with its line and severity
- allow legitimate file-token pairs

## Example prompts
- Run `/public-surface-audit` to inspect the repository’s public surface.
- Scan another repository with `/public-surface-audit --target <repo path>`.
- Request a hook-friendly result with `/public-surface-audit --json`.

# public-surface-audit — Operator-Private Token Leak Scan

Scans the git-tracked file set (the public surface) for operator-private tokens that were supposed
to stay in gitignored files (e.g. `CLAUDE.local.md`, companion store). After a public/private split,
a front-door fix is not enough — a leaked username or absolute home path anywhere in the tracked set
breaks the "public repo = model-agnostic methodology only" invariant.

> While `marketplace-gate` Check 5 answers "is this repo broadly safe to publish?" (API keys, internal
> domains, license), `public-surface-audit` answers a narrower question: "did any operator-private
> token survive the public/private split into a tracked file?" It scans `git ls-files` only — gitignored
> files like `CLAUDE.local.md` are intentionally out of scope (they are the *correct* home for these tokens).

## Triggers

- `/public-surface-audit`
- `/public-surface-audit --target <repo path>`
- `/public-surface-audit --json` (machine-parseable verdict for hook-gating — see Step 5)
- "Did I leak anything into the public repo?", "public surface audit", "private token scan"
- "Check tracked files for private tokens", "is my public/private split clean?"
- "Did any operator-private token survive into a tracked file?", "scan before publish"

---

## Scope — Tracked Files Only

This skill scans **only `git ls-files`** (committed/staged tracked files). Gitignored files are
deliberately excluded — `CLAUDE.local.md`, the companion store, and local session data are the
*correct* home for operator-private tokens, so finding them there is not a leak.

```bash
ARGS="${ARGUMENTS//--json/}"            # strip flags first — "--json" alone must not become the path
REPO_PATH="${ARGS#--target }"
REPO_PATH="$(printf '%s' "$REPO_PATH" | xargs)"
REPO_PATH="${REPO_PATH:-$(pwd)}"
git -C "$REPO_PATH" rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree >/dev/null 2>&1 \
  || { echo "Not a git repo — public-surface-audit scans git-tracked files only. Aborting."; exit 1; }
echo "Target: $REPO_PATH"
git -C "$REPO_PATH" ls-files | wc -l | xargs echo "Tracked files:"
