## What it does

The skill draws on insights from 12 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter. It starts by finding the actual hurdle: preparation, anxiety, slide design or delivery mechanics. Then it suggests a structure that fits the goal, such as the Arrow Method or the 5-Second Moment.

Inside are exercises and frameworks. Some build resilience under disruption, others cover humor and visual design. One thread targets root causes: fix the reason behind the anxiety and filler words and racing tend to resolve on their own. The full list of artifacts lives in `references/artifacts.md`.

It does not replace rehearsal and will not write your talk for you. It asks questions like which single sentence the audience should remember, then works from your answer. Worth installing if you have a talk coming up and want it taken apart rather than just run through out loud.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill public-speaking -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/public-speaking/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill public-speaking -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill public-speaking -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills public-speaking
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill public-speaking -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/public-speaking
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill public-speaking -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/public-speaking/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a talk into prep, delivery and anxiety work
- find the one sentence the audience should remember
- build a story around a moment of realization
- cut filler words and rushed delivery
- prepare answers for the Q&A after a talk

## Example prompts
- Help me prep a conference talk, start by diagnosing whether my weak spot is preparation or delivery.
- Break my talk down with the Arrow Method and tell me which one sentence should stick with the audience.
- I want to rehearse Q&A after my presentation, run the ADD structure with me.

# Mastery of Public Speaking

Transform your technical expertise into compelling narratives that command authority and drive action.

Help the user with mastery of public speaking using insights from 12 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Diagnose the hurdle** - Identify if the challenge is preparation, anxiety management, slide design, or delivery mechanics.
2. **Apply frameworks** - Suggest specific structures like the Arrow Method or the 5-Second Moment based on the user's goal.
3. **Simulate delivery** - Offer game-based exercises or visualization techniques to build resilience and mental bandwidth.
4. **Refine with humor and visuals** - Integrate strategic humor and cinematic slide design to elevate the presentation's impact.

## Core Principles

### Decompose the skill
Dharmesh Shah: "I have custom software that I've written that will say, 'Okay, here are the points at which the audience laughed.' Actually audibly laughed. That's the only way it counts. And this actually... and it comes down to this metric that standup comedians use called LPM laughs per minute."

Master public speaking by breaking it down into measurable sub-skills like slide design and humor. Use objective data, such as laughs per minute, to optimize your performance based on audience engagement.

### Visualize the entire sequence
Matt Abrahams: "Visualization is a really useful technique and you see yourself not just in the moment of speaking, but getting up to the stage, seeing it being well received, thinking about how you step off the stage. We see athletes do this kind of thing all the time, and there's good research to say that this desensitizes people."

Desensitize your brain to anxiety through detailed mental visualization. Imagine the full sequence from walking onto the stage to the final audience response to gain a greater sense of agency.

### Identify the five-second moment
Matthew Dicks: "It's a moment of either transformation, meaning I'm telling you a story about how I once used to be one kind of person and now I'm a new kind of person. Or more common is realization. Which is I used to think something and then some stuff happened and now I think a new thing."

Every compelling story centers on a singular moment of internal transformation or realization. Build your entire narrative around this specific five-second flip in perspective.
