## What it does

The skill covers CLI administration of Proxmox VE hosts. It maps out `qm` for KVM virtual machines and `pct` for LXC containers, plus the supporting tools: `pvesm` for storage, `pvecm` for clusters, `pveam` for templates, `pvesh` for the API from a shell, and `pveperf` for host benchmarking.

Your agent gets concrete commands. Create a VM with a set core count and memory, attach an ISO, take a snapshot, clone a template, migrate a running guest to another node. For containers: download a template, assign a static IP, bind-mount a host directory with `mp0`, enable nesting. There are sections on cloud-init, PCI passthrough, UEFI boot and serial console.

Everything here assumes CLI work, not the web UI. These commands rewrite host and guest configuration, so try them on a test node before pointing the agent at a production cluster.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bastos/skills --skill proxmox-admin -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/proxmox-admin/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bastos/skills --skill proxmox-admin -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bastos/skills --skill proxmox-admin -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bastos/skills proxmox-admin
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bastos/skills --skill proxmox-admin -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bastos/skills --path proxmox-admin
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bastos/skills --skill proxmox-admin -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bastos/skills/tree/HEAD/proxmox-admin/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a KVM VM with the right cores, memory and network
- spin up an LXC container from a downloaded template
- snapshot a guest before a kernel upgrade and roll back if it breaks
- attach an NFS or ZFS pool to a node
- migrate a running VM to another cluster node

## Example prompts
- Create VM 100 with 4 cores and 8 GB of memory on local-lvm
- Snapshot container 200 before the upgrade and call it clean-install
- Show the config for VM 100 and add a second NIC on bridge vmbr1

# Proxmox VE Administration

## Overview

Proxmox VE is a server virtualization platform built on Debian. It manages KVM virtual machines and LXC containers through a web UI or CLI tools. This skill covers CLI-based administration using `qm` (VMs), `pct` (containers), and supporting utilities.

## When to Use

- Creating, configuring, or managing KVM virtual machines
- Spawning and administering LXC containers
- Managing Proxmox storage, networking, or clustering
- Automating VM/container provisioning via scripts
- Troubleshooting Proxmox host or guest issues

**Not for:** Web UI-only workflows (use the CLI equivalents below).

## Quick Reference

| Tool | Purpose |
|------|---------|
| `qm` | Manage KVM virtual machines |
| `pct` | Manage LXC containers |
| `pvesm` | Manage storage |
| `pvecm` | Manage cluster |
| `pveam` | Manage appliance/template downloads |
| `pvesh` | Access the Proxmox API from the shell |
| `pveperf` | Benchmark host performance |

## VM Management with `qm`

### Creating a VM

```bash
# Create a VM with ID 100
qm create 100 --name my-vm --memory 2048 --cores 2 --sockets 1 \
  --net0 virtio,bridge=vmbr0 --ostype l26
# Create with SCSI disk on local-lvm storage (32GB)
qm create 100 --name my-vm --memory 4096 --cores 4 \
  --scsi0 local-lvm:32 --scsihw virtio-scsi-pci \
  --net0 virtio,bridge=vmbr0 --ostype l26
# Attach an ISO for installation
qm set 100 --cdrom local:iso/ubuntu-22.04-server.iso --boot order=ide2
```

### VM Lifecycle

| Command | Purpose |
|---------|---------|
| `qm start <vmid>` | Start a VM |
| `qm shutdown <vmid>` | Graceful ACPI shutdown |
| `qm stop <vmid>` | Force stop (like pulling power) |
| `qm reboot <vmid>` | Reboot a VM |
| `qm reset <vmid>` | Hard reset |
| `qm suspend <vmid>` | Suspend to RAM |
| `qm resume <vmid>` | Resume from suspend |
| `qm destroy <vmid>` | Delete VM and its disks |
| `qm destroy <vmid> --purge` | Delete VM, disks, and all related jobs |

### VM Configuration

```bash
# Show current config
qm config 100
# Modify hardware
qm set 100 --memory 8192
qm set 100 --cores 4
qm set 100 --balloon 2048          # dynamic memory (min)
qm set 100 --cpu cputype=host      # pass through host CPU features
qm set 100 --machine q35           # use Q35 chipset (for PCIe passthrough)
# Add/resize disks
qm set 100 --scsi1 local-lvm:50    # add 50GB disk
qm disk resize 100 scsi0 +20G      # grow existing disk by 20GB
# Networking
qm set 100 --net0 virtio,bridge=vmbr0,tag=10   # VLAN tagged
qm set 100 --net1 virtio,bridge=vmbr1           # second NIC
# Cloud-init (for automated provisioning)
qm set 100 --ide2 local-lvm:cloudinit
qm set 100 --ciuser admin --cipassword 'secret'
qm set 100 --ipconfig0 ip=10.0.0.50/24,gw=10.0.0.1
